Hi everyone! I was hoping that I could get some advise about Kittens. First off with in the last few months our family has lost 2 cats. The first was last fall when Beaker who was 17 became ill and had to be put to sleep then our other cat Sammy 16 years old got out and was hit by a car the day before Easter. Both were great cats and I miss them both. Fun thing is that they were my wife's cats before we were married and I alway complained about those damn cats! My wife new better! Any way the loss of these 2 dear pets really p;ayed hard on our 3 daughters and shortly after we lost Sammy a friend/neighbor told us that her cat had just had a litter of 5 kittens and if we were interested we could have as many as we liked. Well after a few visits we picked 2 of the kittens. A cute torty calico and an orange and white Tabby. My question is how old should they be before we bring them home? They will be 6 weeks old on April 29th and we had always heard that 6 weeks was the best time to bring them home, but a book that my wife and I read stated that kitten should be no less then 8 weeks old before they are seperated from thier mother! What do you feel we should do? Get them at 6 weeks or wait until they are 8 weeks?

Firstly, welcome to TCS ! I'm sorry for the loss of your kitties, but am proud that you are planning on welcoming new kits into your home soon. Please wait until they are at least 8 weeks old, longer if you can before you bring them home. If they are 8 weeks and older, mom cat has longer to teach them the "basics" of being a cat, like litterpan manners and such. It also reduces "early separation" problems too, like nursing on strange objects. Personally, when we were raising Himalayans, I never let them go before 12 weeks. Hope to see pics when you get these cuties!

Ideally- 12 weeks, otherwise you can have problems. But since you are going with littermates, 8 weeks is good. But not 6 weeks, that is to young, they need to stick around mom for awhile yet. They are both cute, and you are about to find out that Torties have Cattitude! LOL

Welcome! I would definitely wait. I had a little girls 3 and 5 (my friend's children) that had wait to claim their new pets. I had planned to let them go at eight weeks, but I could tell it was too soon. They were adopted out at 10 weeks. I felt bad making the little girls wait an additional two weeks, but it was the correct thing to do.
