This is a great site and I'm not about to go away
as I love the "atmosphere" here, but does anyone perchance, know of any forums anywhere that cater more to showing, breeding, and the pedigreed cat fancy in general? Especially ones that use the vBulletin software (such as this site) which is what I'm used to and vastly prefer. I tried Yahoo! groups for instance, but I cannot stand the format they use! Those are more like mailing lists which may have been acceptable at one time, but not these days

I don't know of a forum just for breeders or showing. I came across a website at one time, I think it was showcatsonline, but there was too much involved for me to stick around.
A few weeks ago, I had mentioned to someone about possibly starting a Forum on TCS for people who show...maybe we can get that going

That would be cool. I think, however it may need to really be its own domain. I've checked out showcatsonline.com. I think $49.00 a year is a bit steep, and although I've no doubt they have many of the "serious" breeders/hobbiests frequenting the site, the people that are on the fringes (such as myself) would be rather left out. After all the "serious" folks can take it off their income tax, for the rest of us (i.e. "hobbiests" in the eyes of the IRS) $49.00 might be a goodly chunk of our capital! I wonder what sort of bandwidth such a site might take up???

As an aside, has anyone figured out exactly how "hobbyiest" (or whatever) is supposed to be spelled? dictionary.com has failed me in this instance!

Somewhat. That's one of those sites where I find the format awkward to use. Also the Maine Coon sub-forum, as usual
, seems to be littered with "I just adopted this cat from the shelter. Is it a Maine Coon?" type of posts (Sorry, if you do not have papers showing that it's registered with one of the feline registries, then no, it's not a Maine Coon.) But I haven't really checked into the Show forum under there. Thanks for reminding me of the site so that I visited again and gave it another look!

I think you should try the Yahoo Groups again

They were originally designed as an email list, but you don't have to receive individual emails if you don't want to (in "edit my groups" just select "no email"). That way, you can read the posts in the message board. I have found it very simple to use (the emails were driving me crazy too).

You are probably familiar with their huge Maine Coon forum called mcats, that has over 1,500 members. If you are looking for a "serious" Maine Coon focused forum, this is the place to be.

Whenever I am at a show, and breeders are talking about internet boards, 99% of the time they are talking about a Yahoo group.

You will have to sign up, but it is free. Some lists may require approval to join, but most do that to prevent trolls and spam.

Already have
, and I am a member of mcats, but again it's the format that drives me nuts. I feel like I have to winnow through a lot to find anything and the search engine is the absolute pits in that there doesn't seem to be any way to search the whole database. It will only search a "range" of posts, then you have to go to the next range. Takes forever

I'm new here, and I like the forum a lot, but I has been looking for the same thing as you and I'm not a big fan of mailinglists either.

I have been thinking of starting a breeder forum myself, but I didn't really want to put a lot of work into it, if nobody else but myself would use it

In Russia we have a forum which is built like this one. There are sections for professionals and amateurs (all open). However the professionals have an ability to open on this site a special restricted forums (by application to the site owner) dedicated for a special breeds - we have Plush (for british shorthair) Scotlandian (for scottish fold lovers) Curl corner ets. People who want to join the restricted forums (which are not visible to to anyone except the members) - has to write a letter to forum moderator and he puts him for voting. This system works very well as on the restricted forums only professional breeders and show expert are members and you can get a really qualified advice/
And it is all free - but maybe this is possible in Russia only
