our bin men are refusing to take bags of cat litter because they say it counts as industrial waste eg. building material because its made from gravel.

this is the most ridiculous thing i've heard, the litter was mixed in with houshold waste and wasnt even that much. i've only got a cat not a tiger!

now if i put out cat litter i have to bag it in three bin bags instead of one

what a waste! it wasnt like it was even heavy. i managed to carry it down two flights of stairs no problem and put it in our rubbish container.

grrrrr!

I'm lucky, I have 4 acres. We just dump the litter out by the edge of the horse pasture. It is becoming quite a pile, though.
If that is true for all of London, think of the money you could make with a cat litter disposal service! Wow!

We don't have a Wheelin Bin we just use bags which we buy from the council and they take it away. The bags are filled with lots of kitty litter and dog poo, and they have never refused. Even when the bags split when they are holding them.

It is bad on the environment, especially the clumping kind.

Well, that makes me feel a little better because I use the clay litter (non clumping)

I don't think our garbage men know whats in the bags either
Until the bags split open on them

Do you have a Wilko's near you? They sell this wonderful stuff Lily's breeder put us on to. It's recycled wood, in sawdust pellets. It smells wonderful and breaks down into a sawdust when the kitty has used it a few times. But the best thing is that it's also flushable (not in large amounts obviously). So, Lily's toilet is next to our cloakroom toilet. All her urine is absorbed into the sawdust and bin men don't mind taking the sawdust. Her poop we simply scoopy out and flush straight down the toilet.

Another good thing - it's not very expensive either!

No it doesn't clump at all. It breaks down into a soft sawdust, no sharp bits and no splinters. It has a kind of pine fragrance to it and doesn't smell nasty either.

The breeder was lovely and sent Lily away with a bag of goodies, cat litter, tray, food bowls and food and feeding mat. So we thought we'd give it a try and have found it to be wonderful.

When we went to the cat show the other weekend, a lot of other Singapura slaves were using it too.

So do you just leave it until the end of the week when you empty it completely, apart from the poop of course

Yep the end of the week is fine - the urine is absorbed completely. Her toilet is dry at the bottom and it smells nice.

She is a very fussy kitty and finds her toilet perfectly acceptable like this. How fussy? She won't eat her food from the dish on her place mat if she's knocked a spot of water onto the mat from her water dish
. Princess Lily

When the pellets first go in you need less than you think, because as the pellets break down the volume of stuff in the toilet expands till you're left with quite a soft, fluffy layer.

We have wheelie bins where I am so I just bag up the cat litter and chuck it in there. What the binmen don't know, won't hurt them!!!

Actually, I have hardly thrown any away for a long time now. Guin is in/out during the daytime and at night he has the litter tray to use (as I keep him in)but he hardly uses it. I think that he prefers going outside or has even realised he has to do his business before bedtime

I think that some cat litters have toxic chemicals and stuff in them so maybe it's difficult for the refuse sites to destroy
I think that I read that it is also dangerous for pregnant women to go near it or something....

We've never had any problems, even when were were living in an area here the bin men were very fussy (e.g taking no more than what fit in the bin/so many bags). We just bag it up in a black sag and stick in it the bin or sometimes if we have another open also we put the bag in another bag. And we've never had any problems....starnge the bin men managed to find out what was in yours (it could of been anything) do they go around looking in the bags? ewww!
