does anyone else have trouble balancing their lives with the wants of their cat?

this might sound really stupid but I'm finidng it so difficult to balance essays, boyfriend, friends plus Maverick.

She cant understand how i can be in the house but not attending to her every whim. plus she shows her distaste at being so 'neglected' by meowing the whole time.

it would be cruel to put her in another room so as i type out my essay i have a cat fishing rod in the other hand which i dangle for her. or a huge plate of prawns or whiskas (kitty junk food!) which will placate her for a time.

how do you all do it?!

It's kind of like kids..if you have one, they become much more dependant on the adults for companionship...I am an only child by the way...

I have 5 cats, 4 kids, 4 guinea pigs and 2 fish..there is something for everyone to keep themselves entertained...ever thought about getting your cat another cat?

He has so many needs and I nearly always reach them....I try to ensure that I have played with Guin as much as possible during the evenings and sometimes in the morning when I am getting ready to leave for work - I still always feel guilty. My mum says that I spoil him too much, but he is my baby and he deserves it

I am going to a concert this evening (Alanis M) and won't be home until about midnight. Guin has plenty of food left out for him but I have still asked me neighbour to go in and feed him and turn a light on for him! lol

So yeah, it is difficult and sometimes I do think it is similar to having a child especially when they are still young un's! I can relate to dangling the cat toy and trying to work at the same time!

Where abouts in London are you from btw?

I have zero trouble balancing it all. Fact is, I'd feel UNbalanced if I was one-cat-less. I have 6 cats, they all have their own 'buddies' with each other, they entertain each other (and entertain US!). I find it pretty easy, even with one being on a special diet & some being needier than others.

I spoil them all rotten, they all get loves hugs & kisses. They get tons of attention from us humans, even if they don't want it! But most of the time, they are very sociable and want to be around us.

I'd feel weird if I didn't have Dusty on my lap everytime I'm at the computer, Snickers nibbling my face in the mid of the night, Hammie banging at the shower door, KC on my hair while I sleep, Jess meowing to be brushed every morning and Zorro snoring every night by my side.

But I only have one kid who is very capable, and no other adult in the household to 'worry' about. So I guess I have plenty of time for my furbabies!

My Dad dislikes cats. He always trained them to be bad. If they scratched the furniture, he yelled and "threw" them outside, meaning he opened the door and they sauntered outside. If they jumped on the window screens, he opened the door to yell at them, and they came back in!

Maybe you are doing the same thing-bug Meowmie and you get extra treats and games! Try giving her 100% attention when she comes to you for loving, then after a few minutes, send her on her way.

Good luck! And remember, they are always one step ahead of us! So don't be surprised if she wins the battle of the wills!

ever thought about getting your cat another cat?
she has a 7 week old kitten to keep her entertained but she just prefers my company. to befair, he can be pretty annoying! lol

i didnt mention him because he's in his own little world and no trouble. at he needs is a comfy pillow and a bowl of cat food!

South/west london. outer london, where its still a bit green!

probably! but she only likes me, even though theres 6 of us living here (i come from a big family), she doesnt even really like her kitten. shes loves him but he bugs her!

if i ignore her shes a lot worse or she breaks something. i went away for the night on valentines day and came home to find she'd dropped two books and the tv remote into a fish tank of water (i didnt think she could reach) which was standing out for when i clean my goldfish!

from what you guys are saying it sounds like Mavericks far too spoilt and i need more cats! lol

Oh I can sooo relate. I feel so busy all the time, and when I am home and need to be working on stuff, Conner will bellow like a dying cow, and he doesnt stop. He will trip me up, and try to "help". The thing is with him though, is that he catches on real quick when your juggling your attention between him and work. Like, I cant just dangle a toy from one hand and do work with the other, he gets it and will stop playing and come and plop on top of everything, so I am trying to read or write around his furry body,,lol. He has to be petted and patted and coddled. But whenever I have free time to love and bug him, then he'd prefer to eat or sleep,,lol. But you know, I really wouldnt have it any other way. Cats are on their own time schedule, and no human in the entire universe will ever change that, it's one of the things that make them special. I know that some people have probs with their cats because they dont want to be petted or loved or held, so I really cant complain,,give me too much lovin anyday!

my oldest child is 8 and she was an only child for 6 years, needed constant attention, now i have 3 kids...8yrs, 2yrs, and 5mo's...i also have 3 cats, it's easier with more because there's always someone or something to entertain everyone, your baby definately needs a friend

Well at 7 weeks, I doubt he would pay much attention to him. I bet in a few weeks that will change. Whenever we have new babes in the house, the big ones either get ticked for awhile or ignore them. By the time they are big enough to play around and be big kitties, usually around 12 weeks and up, they start playing with the older cats...give it time.

Plus, does your cat have its own place to climb? We have 2, 7 foot trees and I will NEVER be without them again...the cats have REALLY stopped climbing book shelves since they have their own climbing spots.

If I'm busy most of my cats will occupy themselves. If Elmo is hungry he wont leave me alone until he gets fed though.

Dance lives in the cat room but if she had the run of the house she would be under my feet 24-7, and up my legs purring her furry head off.
