Oh wow E, that is scary. Thank goodness you have such a sharp mind!
Susie, thank you so much for sharing that info! That crying baby scheme gave me chills!

Another couple of tips: When you're walking somewhere alone and you feel uneasy, walk with your keys sticking out between your fingers so that you can use them to rake across someone's face (I know it sounds graphic, but it does work) if they attempt to attack you.
Also, it is commonly thought that if you are on your cell phone, you are less likely to be attacked. Not so. Interviews with rapists have found that they looked for people who were on their cell phones or doing other distracting things b/c those victims were rarely aware of what was going on around them.
Finally, beware of walking with your hair in a ponytail. That makes you easier to grab.

It reminds me of a similar thread that Cheryl made. It was just as alarming and informative.

Holy cow! That's so scary...especially the crying baby trick. I would totally fall for that, had i not read that.

Elizabeth, you're so brave! That's awesome that you though quickly and escaped a potentially harmful situation.

This world is SO crazy!

the most chilling story i ever read was about a serial rapist who preyed on lone women with cats. he would stalk his victimn for days/weeks and strike when they open the back door to let the cat out.

when asked by the press for a comment he looked into the camera and said:

"Never leave your door open. you never know who's watching"

now i'm ultra paranoid.

This is so scary!

About the elbow, a girl once had me against my locker, and had my neck in her hand.
I used my elbow, and this actually fractured her nose. Hey, it was my life or her nose...

Anyways, this is VERY helpful.

Hehe...I never leave the house alone without Caeser, my doggie. He's bigger then me, and looks very intimadating. I don't believe in guard dogs, and Caeser would NEVER mean to hurt a fly, but he keeps me safe.

Puerto Rico... land of rice and beans.
Want a tip from a man? Ok, here I go.

I know this one is vox populi and as old as time itself, but if you ever have to walk down some dark alley in the night or similar place... perhaps the scariest places can be downtown areas after midnight, carry an umbrella with you. Even if it isn't a rainy day. Preferably one of those heavy umbrellas that are made of a metal skeleton. They are heavy, but if someone gets a bit too fresh with you, all it takes is one good hit on the head... or a good stab at the groin.

Also if you feel there is someone following you, you should keep a map in your mind of the more safe places in that particular area. For example, the entrance of some important government office that has got a night shift policeman guarding the place, (commonplace in Puerto Rico) or where there is some 24 hour store (some supermarkets, Walgreens and Eckerd pharmacies, bars...) where there are plenty of people, and try to head off in that direction, but don't run.

Here are a few more tips.
1) When walking through a mall/store parking lot STAY OFF THE STUPID CELL PHONE!!! I don't know how many times I have seen woman/girls walking alone in a prking lot yapping on the cell phone with not one clue as to what is going on around them. You could walk up behind them and grab them. It doesn't matter if you are talking to someone on the phone, the predator will not care. Before the person you are talking to has any idea of what had just happened to you, you would be long gone from the area with the predator. Also, when walking through big parking lots, do not walk close to the cars, but walk down the center of the lane. That way, you wll not be close to any vehicles.
2) If you do happened to be grabbed, by all means FIGHT!! Kick, grab, bite, yell, scream.
3) If someone does happen to jump into the passenger side of your car and they have a gun, think about it for a moment. If you do drive, do not go where they tell you to go!! You are in control of that vehicle even though they may have a gun at you. Do you think a predator would shoot you while you are driving?? They risk getting killed in an accident if they do. Drive like a maniac! Weave, go fast, do anything. The idea here is to get the attention of other drivers. They will call the police or the police may spot you! The idea here is for you to take control of the situation. They may have a gun pointed at you but, that gun may not even be loaded! They use the gun to scare you and break you down. You may have to take a chance like this, but the thing is. If you DO go where the predator tells you to go, it is 100% for certain that something bad is going to happen to you. If you take the chance to fight or take control of the situation, you are giving yourself a better chance of coming out of the situation unharmed, even if that chance is a small one. A small chance is better than no chance at all.
Also, be prepared! You do not need to go through life scare or paranoid that something bad is going to happen. But, if you have plans and ideas of what you would do in the situation, you will remain calm and increase your chances of getting out ok.

I put that in my earlier post on this thread too
But it's a great point that should be reiterated!

Also and this is gonna sound strange but I got this out of a book about the Night Stalker Serial Killer. While at home.

Keep you bushes trimmed down around your house that way no one can hide in them.

Always lock all windows and doors.

Keep your entry way lit up.

I'm sure there were others, but those are the ones that stick out. There are a lot of houses around here thathave over grown shrubbs and trees that block the view from the street.

I'd also keep your car doors locked when gassing up. It would only take a minute for a stranger to slide into your car.
