Some of the replies are funny if you pretend it is about noses.

I was the picker in high school. I really regret my behavior now but I can't take it back unfortunately.

I was both. I got picked on when I was younger but as I got older, I definitely picked on my cousin. I did horrible things to him but for some reason, he still loves me. He used to go camping with me and my mom and stepdad. The campground we went to had outhouses. Everytime I would catch him in the outhouse, I would lock it from the outside and leave him for a while. Also I gave him the chocolate laxatives (Ex-lax, I think) and told him it was Hershey's. I pulled crazy pranks on him but I never beat him up or anything. I wasn't THAT bad.

I saw that Dr. Phil too and just wanted to cry along with the children and parents of the children who were being bullied.
It brought back a LOT of memories for me.
In middle school, I had to ride the bus with two VERY nasty boys. They always picked on me about everything and I faced the obligatory being chased home from the bus stop. One night, we get a call from a stranger saying that there was some graffiti spray-painted inside the home he was renovating. Apparently, the 2 boys broke in and spray-painted "Amy O***** is a (word that rhymes with 'boar') and a (word that rhymes with 'witch')" and included my home phone number. I was in 7th grade!!! I was SO upset and my parents were livid. They went to one of the boys' grandfather and it stopped after that. I had even blocked that whole part out of my mind(some people do that with traumatic situations) until my mom accidentally brought it up last year. I feel so bad for kids being picked on now and I can relate to all of you other "pickee" TCS-ers

I was the Pickee.

Red hair, freckles, glasses & braces. Short, pudgy, and I was in the band. Band geek, sci-fi nut, etc., I had the world against me. I got picked on so badly, I had to write secret notes to the teachers begging her to move me to the other side of the room to get me away from this one boy who would kick me every time I'd sit down at my desk. Then there was a Trio of "perfect" girls (think of that movie "Heathers") in Elementary School who would terrorize me. They'd not let me out of the bathroom stall, block all the exits, and wad up wet toilet paper and throw it all over me.

I did go to the teachers a lot, and well the teachers really did nothing to help. So I just hung around all the other ugly ducklings and then got into Jr. High and finally, wasn't so ugly any more once my braces & glasses came off, I lost weight and miraculously, red hair was a thing of beauty instead of ugliness!

Bullies suck. I feel so sorry for kids these days.

Oh Amie, that story is awful..........I just never understood why some people belittle others. I don't care what age they are. I always befriended the kids that got picked on.......

I was picked on pretty bad, not physically but mentally. I still don't trust people at all. I blocked it all out for a long time but when I was younger I kept a diary of all the mean things that were said and done to me and I was cleaning stuff out one day and found it and I literally went into shock. I didn't even remember it until that point. There were so many holes in my life but now I see why I am the way I am and I'm proud of who I've become despite the past.

Amy, that is so sad, honey!!! Kids can be so very cruel. I'm sorry that had to happen to someone as sweet as you, you didn't deserve it. I don't know why kids do what they do. I look back at myself and I don't know why I picked on my cousin. He laughs about it now but I still feel bad. I felt even worse when I read your story. I never did anything that bad to him but I feel horrible that I was in the same category as those goons who picked on you. From a picker to pickees--------------I'm so sorry!!

I tried to, too. Sometimes, they'd just push everyone away, though. Like, there was one girl, in a lock in at my church. She is African-American, and a boy said something inappropriate about her race. I found it abhoring, and told the youth-leader about it. He got in trouble, and though I was labeled by him as a snitch, I still think I did the right thing.

I don't understand why some kids find it amusing to pick on others and make them insecure, scared, and tormented. I just don't get it.

Thanks Susie and Kelly
I really appreciate your kind words

I think the biggest lesson that former pickers can learn from stories like these is what to teach your children: compassion, understanding, open-mindedness, and love. How we treat others has a lot to do with how our parents treated us and taught us to treat others.

You did a wonderful thing, sticking up for someone who was still trying to find her voice. Bless you

Often they're just very unhappy people themselves and it gives them some gratification to bring other people down as well.
