Several years ago, a developer wanted our property and the ones on either side so he could build several houses on the property behind us (formerly belonging to mom's parents). Mom refused. Not long afterwards the neighbor to one side died. His children sold to a young man who grew up in the neighborhood. (My sister was his babysitter several times.)

Just after he bought the house we were working in the yard and he came over and thanked Mom for not selling. He said it let him buy the house at a price he could afford. Since then he has been mowing our front yard. We offer to pay him for his time or gas, but he just insists he needs a place to turn his riding mower around.

Anyway, he was here yesterday and the yard looks nice.

Thank you, Neighbor Steve!

Sounds like a great neighbour! It's very nice to see neighbourly qualities nowadays, when so many of us are so involved in our own lives that we don't even know our neighbours names. Say, do you think Steve would like to cut our lawn? lol just kidding, we don't even HAVE a lawn.

Fran are you talking about a alotment like they have in the UK???

The land around my house is under pressure for development, however there are very large dairy farms that use most of the land for farming. When our neighbor passed away we bought his 2 acres from the estate as we didn't want it developed. My neighbor behind us wants to buy the 10-15 acres his neighbor had so it won't be developed either. I do not like urban sprawl!!!

I don't like urban sprawl either! Since we did not sell, the developer had to sell the land in one piece. Less money for him.

After my Stepgrandmother died, 3 of the 5 kids wanted to sell right away. Mom wanted the pasture right behind us as her share of the sale (to prevent development) but the others wanted to sell it all in one piece.

Forgot to add, the developer stopped by (to ask mom to sell) while we were loading the van for a trip. We were taking cases of mineral specimens including our 270 pound geode. We warned him if he stuck around long enough he would get to help load it! He did - but all for naught.

Mom has lived in this house most of her 76 years. It was built by her father. I've lived here all my 48 years.

I think that is great!!

I tell yea, that is happening all over our area and it makes us sick. Developers are putting 10 houses on apiece of land that used to have 1...it's good to hear that the house went to someone who needed and wanted it for the right reasons.

Yup. Lots of that developer sweep happening. There have been a couple of them in our neighbourhood, and we've realized for a good number of years, that it's only a matter of time, before ours goes, too -- we rent, so we have no control over the sale. Good for you for hanging on when it was reasonable to do so. And what a neat neighbour! That's just plain decent.

Oh Jan - what a lovely neighbour!

Our neighbours are very kind as well. One of our neighbours works at one of NZ's biggest milk factories and every week he gives us nice fresh milk for free. He also gives us flavoured milk too, and since it is a big family they always cook too much food so the dogs alwauys get a sausage or two each, every other day.

What a nice neighbor, would you ask him to come and take care of our acre and a 1/4.

We have community gardens here in the urban parts of the state. They are also known as pea patches.
