It could be anything. A cat bite, an abscess and infection. Please take your cat to the vet tomorrow- they will shave the area, examine the wound and treat it- is it possible you cut the cat's skin while trying to remove the mat?

Yes they can get fly strike-

Please take him to the vet, he may need some meds or stiches depending on the depth of the hole.

Let us know how it goes.

yuck, I really hope it's not maggots but it sounds like it really might be. If so there's probably more than one hole, so make sure that if it is found to be a maggot hole that your cat is shaved :K that is the grossest thing I have ever heard of.. bleh. Reminds me of that weird frog that caries its babies in its back. BLeh!!!

eew it does. How do they get the maggots under their skin anyway?? I'm shore a cat won't lie there while a fly comes up and digs a hole and lays eggs in it. Thanks again for all your help
