Porn dialers? (Not X-rated!)

Twice this week my anti-virus software has picked up and quarantined what it labels "porn dialers". Before I write to the company and embarrass myself by asking an obvious question, is the name self-explanatory? Since I've only visited news and cat sites, I wonder how I could have gotten them, especially since my firewall is usually quite good about blocking things.

This is software that gets installed on your computer and is able to make phone calls if you have a modem. It will usually connect to other computers through your phone line which are usually porn sites. These numbers are usually pay per call/by minute so you are charged for the amount of time your computer is connected to it.

You might want to get ride of it ASAP.

I became familiar with porn dialers the hard way once they appeared in our phone bill, for using a porn dialer, which appeared listed as a call to Comoros of all places, over $30 for that call - And I had never used a porn dialer in my life (I am not stupid. I know my parents will find out with the phone bill) . I am still trying to explain my parents I never made that damn call. The phone company in the end let us go without paying the call. Its not uncommon in Puerto Rico to be billed for calls to places you've never heard of.

Aha! I knew what a dialer was, but was wondering about the "porn" bit. I got rid of it right away.
