Any one watch this last week? It's on again now, and we're watching it again...

I have to tell you, considering where I live most natural disasters just don't concern me too much. Tornados almost never hit this close to the mountains. Obviously in Colorado hurricanes and tsunami's aren't on the agenda. Earthquakes don't generally hit here, and if they do they are so minor most people don't feel it.

But this....this concept actually scares me. Because it *could* happen. It happened before. And if it does, Colorado is pretty well toast. Good thing the chances of this happening are pretty low...

If it happens again, 2/3'ds of the United States will be toast! I haven't seen the program, but I've read an article on it.

Heidi, I hear ya!

I'm moving back to 6hrs from Yellowstone, and I did watch it last week. That poor guy in Bozeman, all I kept thinking was, "That's only 3 hrs from me!!!! AAAAAUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!

I did think the reporting was a bit alarmist - I'd like to think we will have more warning than that, a lot more seismic activity preceding it. But maybe I'm just being optimistic

Aw, that movie was great! It was really scary how they hid so much of the truth from everyone, huh? Part of me wants to think that yes, we would have more warning than that, but another part of me thinks that the movie held some shreds of the truth. Totally amazing, though. I have always held a deep passion for volcanos, and that movie totally encaptured me. If you haven't seen it yet, I totally recommend it. Great movie!

Well, would you rather live close by and be toast immediately, or live further away and die a slow and gradual death of lung disease and starvation? Some choice, huh?

Jen, I have to say...I think that they portrayed how the system & bureaucrats would deal with something like that. I don't think we would have any warning at all from them, to avoid exactly what they showed...mass hysteria, horrible traffic jams, etc. Whether that's right or not, only time could tell.

one of the things they leave out of most documentaries is that the ground at yellowstone has gone up and down by amazing amounts over the past few years (they just talk about the "up", which is scarier). It's a "living" siesmic center, but that's not a reason to assume a detonation is imminent.

at last count about %10 of the magma was real liquid "lava", as opposed to about %50 needed for an eruption.

Also, the ground is right now about 5 feet higher then it was in 1920. Before it's detonation, the ground at Mt. St. Helens was 50 feet above normal. (but they leave that last part out in most of the shows)

yes, it'll suck when it blows, but I think we're ok for a while. ;-)
