If you're going with vintage (mine is a 1981), it may or may not be more costly in terms of repairs, but they are much more powerful, zippy, fun to ride and they are just so damn fine looking!

Insurance and gas are also cheap (I pay $280/Year CAN for insurance on the 2005 and $4 to fill up the tank)... so you can't go wrong there.
I was looking at getting a bike or scooter last year, but through looking around thought that the scooters probably wouldn't be fast enough. How many cc's are your scooters?? I was worried about making it up a big hill with those 50cc ones. Also, what company do you go through for insurance? The quotes that I got were around $2500 per year, and some companies wouldn't even talk to me (stupidheads). I ended up getting a car instead, but I really really really lust after bikes. Maybe my next boyfriend will be into it.

Most of the common insurance companies don't really cater to motorcycle/scooter folks. Try going to www.progressive.com. I think the total insurance on our VStars runs around $350 a year. Hubby's 1100 is a bit more than my 650. You can play around with Progressive's online calculator, although if you've got something that isn't listed you'll have to call. It seems like the insurance on a scooter would be lower than on a "regular" motorcycle (especially since they usually have smaller engines) but a lot of it depends on location and personal info (age, gender, etc.) also, of course.

Oooops! I just noticed you're in Canada. I don't know if they insure out of the country or not
. Probably not.

I would agree with Cindy. The insurance industry certainly doesn't cater to bikers/scooterists.

Through a local broker/insurance company, I pay about $430/year for my 125CC Vespa and about $270/year for my 50CC Vespa. Insurance rates are good... but there are often restrictions (including an initial motorcycle safey course with some insurers).

I don't know where you got that quote from (seems far-fetched to me), but north of Toronto I'm guessing there are fewer insurers for 2-wheelers, and they can gouge you at will.

PM me if you have any questions.

Really? I'm surprised, with your warm climate. Perhaps there's restrictions on scooter there due to emissions?

Oh yeah, they're very popular here... I'm surprised I haven't sold my vintage scoot yet.
And they're also huge over in the UK and in parts of the US (esp. San Francisco).

I doubt there are any restrictions. You should see some of the cars in our area, that puff out black smoke like nothing on earth. I'm going to have to keep my eyes peeled!

Hee hee.
I'm sure they're around then... you'll probably see one eventually.

I haven't been able to ride the last few days though, because we've had torrents of rain.

I have a scooter as well. It's not a Vespa. It's a Honda Scooter. I love it. I have actually been hit by a car in the past. It was pretty scarey, and at first I didn't want to get back on and ride again. I'm proud of myself that I did get back on and ride, although now, I'm much more watchful at intersections, even when I'm in my car.

It's great that you got back on the road!
I love riding... and will never give it up. Although I've never been hit and I'm sure that was scary. I'm very aware of my surroundings too while on the road. You have to be when you're riding such a small vehicle.

Toronto isn't unlike New York in that it's hard to come by parking spaces that come with an apartment, and I haven't lived in one apartment in Toronto yet that has parking available for a car (or at least for a reasonable amount of money!), so I share a garage with another scooterist, and we've got 5 scoots stored in there.

I'd love to buy it off of you *drools* (we need a drooling emoticon) but I just got my first car last year. Maybe I'll get you to hook me up someday though. *goes upstairs to pet her helmet*

Actually, we do have a drooling emoticon...
I use it all the time when mentioning Matthew McConaughey

wow! it worked! I swear, sometimes I'm blind. On the other hand, maybe it just needed to be activated by hotness
