Hi there, i'm new here in the forum and i had a question for all that wish to answer. I am already an owner of a wonderful 2yr old cat, and i wanted to add to the family by getting a kitten. I want to know before hand how my cat will react. I have read about how to introduce the cats, but how will they treat me? will they ignore humans now that they have a friend to play with? Also, is it better to get a cat of the opposite sex? I appreciate anyone who can give me some insight into the matter. Thanks!

No one can tell you how your resident cat will react to you introducing another cat into the home.If done right, over time, the process can go easily and the stress level in you and the cats will be minimal. It really depends on your cat, on the new cat, on how much room you have for them now, what type of places you have available where you can put the newcomer and so many other variables. Before you even try to bring another cat home please get the book by Pam Johnson Bennett cat-vs-cat it gives great advice on how to make this transistion easily and what warning signs to look for

Heh that sounds just like my situation about 9 months ago! I had a 2 year old male cat, and my mom's friend had a pregnant kitty. Well I definitely wanted one of the litter, and my mom said yes. Now, the sex of your new kitten will depend on the temperment and territorialness of teh cat you ahve now. My cat elliot is a very territorial boy even though he is fixed. He does not like my mom's old male cat Rosco all that much, so they basically just stay away from each other. BUt I know that elliot liked female cats, so I took a female kitten. SO it really depends on your cat. It oculd be territorial like mine, and in that case if you have a male get a female, and if you have a female, get a female. Again about the "will my cats ignore me" part, it all depends on your cats. Your questions are kind of unanswerable that way O_O. I don't think you can get ignored by your cats. Soon they will be bored with one another and theyll say " Hey! I remember that human thingy that feeds me and buys me toys! I want to be petted" Because no matter how much fun they have playing, cats just arent good at petting xD. Also the reaction of your cat to your kitten also depends on the cat. But eventually they should start getting along and should lurve each other :O
My cats lurve each other ^_^

Oh, and if you have a female and get a male, or a male and get a female, I would hope that you would at least get the females fixed! I know it sounds kind of bad, but if you dont have alot of money its better to have a cat taht makes the babies instead of one that grows them!

If you are unable to spay or neuter any new cat or kitten you are bringing into your home, then chances are good that you don't have extra money for vet bills, emergencies or other situations that come up when you take the responsibility of caring for another animal. You should, if you find yourself in this type of situation seriously rethink adding a cat or any other animal to the home.

My cat was under a year old, and I got a second cat who was five month old.
After a day of hissing and growling at each other, my cats now get along wonderfully well. The older cat is much happier now that I got a second cat, and I am sure the second cat is much happier that he got a buddy. The behavior of my older cat toward me didn't change, but then he was never all that cuddly to begin with, so he isn't cuddly now, and he wasn't cuddly before. I think it's a good idea to get a younger cat (a kitten) of the opposite sex. But mine are both males, and they still get along, so, it's not necessary to get a kitten of the opposite sex.
