Mine, especially the two boys, who apparently spent months or years outdoors, seem to consider themselves prisoners when kept strictly indoors. I couldn't take it with Red Cat. His complaining voice was SO BIG that he drove me nuts. I reached the conclusion that it was better they lived a happy life, even if it might be shorter. So I let them outside days, but try to keep them in nights. Please note, though, that I live in an area with few houses, few cars, no children, and plenty of wooded area with thick underbrush. I do have some concern about coyotes and eagles. But I've decided to take the risks for their happiness. My neighbor's cat lived to age 22, she was allowed out day or night until the last year or two, and she died of natural causes. But if I move to a more highly developed area, I'd keep them in.Originally Posted by Marge
I have a question, for those of you with rescued strays, do they insist on going outside again? Mine never really adjusted to being indoors.
I caved too, I tried, for months literally, to keep him in. I even used a pet communicator, when even SHE told me he just needs to go outside, I gave in. Yeah some people don't approve and I understand, it's not how I want things at all but there is no living with my cat when he's indoor only. when he can go out he is very happy and comfortable, but if not he hates it and is miserable. Plus I deserve peace in my life. My area is very quiet, no cyotes even. I know it's still a risk but i don't feel i have a choice.Originally Posted by twofatcats

Red Cat has changed his behavior as he has aged. He spends a lot more time inside now and hasn't disappeared for a night on the town in about a year. Purdy still spends a lot of time outside during the day, but has never tried to stay out after dark.
He sounds like mine, I wonder sometimes if the rescued ones always have to keep a little edge cause they never know what will happen to them?Originally Posted by GrayKittenLove
Samwise is my rescue kitty. Somone dumped him in my cousin's neighborhood which isn't a very nice place. Well he was smart enough to wander onto my cousin's porch and start meowing. My cousin opened the door took one look at the poor little guy and brought him into the house and called me. As he gets older, I still can not understand why anyone would want to dump him. He's friendly and outgoing and a total love bug. At any rate, I'm glad he turned up he's definately been a blessing in mine and Gandalf's lives. Gandalf gained a playmate and I gained a precious little angel. Even he does have devil horns sprout up ocassionally.
