Abbey & Max both came from the SPCA as babies (at different times) and Logan found our back door. After day 3 of that heartbreaking cry, I had to let him in... Turns out he was 2 lbs @ 4 months old and needed antibiotics and didn't trust a soul in the world. We fixed him right up, and fattened him up a bit. It took quite a while before he didn't run at the slightest sound, but he is such a luv now!

I didn't rescue my girls, but the woman I adopted them from (whose name was Sarah interestingly enough) rescued them. Apparently they were little alley kittens and she brought them and their brother in and fostered them until she adopted them out. I'm so glad she rescued them because they are just the sweetest fluffiest kitties and I can't imagine them surviving out there. I still send her pictures from time to time.

All three of my furbabies are rescues. Red Cat had been abandoned in winter when his first family moved away. A second family did feed him and allowed him and two other abandoned cats to sleep in their garage at night because of the coyotes, but wouldn't let them in the house, as their 15-year-old cat would not tolerate another cat. So he basically lived outside. When the couple decided to roam the countryside in their motorhome for a year, they had to get rid of the outside cats, so I took Red Cat. (If they couldn't find a home for them, they were talking about locking them in the garage and having someone come in once a MONTH to give them food and water.)

Red Cat, age about 9

Purdy had been a stray, roaming the streets in my neighborhood for at least six months before I took him. Actually, the reason I enticed him in originally was because he and Red Cat continually got in fights out in the yard, he had given Red Cat an abscess, and I intended to turn Purdy over to a shelter. But when I got him in, I discovered he had an abscess, probably from a fight with Red Cat. I knew what fate awaited him if I turned him over to the shelter that way, so I took him to the vet to get him cared for. Long story short, by the time I got him healthy enough to give away, he'd won my heart, so he stayed. I had to play referee between Red Cat and Purdy for many months, and now four or five years later, they still don't get along too well. In fact, they are having repeated arguments today.

Purdy, age about 9

Sheba had been part of a starving colony of 50-100 cats. Our local PAWS organization was able to rescue about 15 of them. A 94-year-old rural lady had been taken to a nursing home, leaving her seven cats to form the core of the colony. Apparently a number of drifters on her property had additional cats which joined the colony. I suspect others had been dumped. I'm told there was evidence someone had been shooting at them. I followed the news in the local paper and when I learned two months later that only one of the 15 had been adopted, I checked on Petfinder and found Sheba, who had been part of the colony. Though I really didn't want a third cat, I felt I just had to rescue her from her cage. She's a sweet and beautiful addition to the family. She quickly took over as Queen of the household.

Sheba, age about 2

I have a question, for those of you with rescued strays, do they insist on going outside again? Mine never really adjusted to being indoors.

My Sammy was found by a rescue group, he apparently was dumped into a feral colony after his owners didn't want him, a local woman who does TNR found him and he wasso obviously socialized they found him a home.

Mine, especially the two boys, who apparently spent months or years outdoors, seem to consider themselves prisoners when kept strictly indoors. I couldn't take it with Red Cat. His complaining voice was SO BIG that he drove me nuts. I reached the conclusion that it was better they lived a happy life, even if it might be shorter. So I let them outside days, but try to keep them in nights. Please note, though, that I live in an area with few houses, few cars, no children, and plenty of wooded area with thick underbrush. I do have some concern about coyotes and eagles. But I've decided to take the risks for their happiness. My neighbor's cat lived to age 22, she was allowed out day or night until the last year or two, and she died of natural causes. But if I move to a more highly developed area, I'd keep them in.

Red Cat has changed his behavior as he has aged. He spends a lot more time inside now and hasn't disappeared for a night on the town in about a year. Purdy still spends a lot of time outside during the day, but has never tried to stay out after dark.

I caved too, I tried, for months literally, to keep him in. I even used a pet communicator, when even SHE told me he just needs to go outside, I gave in. Yeah some people don't approve and I understand, it's not how I want things at all but there is no living with my cat when he's indoor only. when he can go out he is very happy and comfortable, but if not he hates it and is miserable. Plus I deserve peace in my life. My area is very quiet, no cyotes even. I know it's still a risk but i don't feel i have a choice.

My two orange boys are rescues.

Tailer was saved by my husband, quite literally, from the jaws of death. He had been caught and his time was up with animal control. He was in a cage in back of a village headquarters waiting to be picked up to be put down. My husband had business in the village, and when he stepped from his car he heard someone screaming. He followed the noise to a cage with a little orange kitten inside who was meowing his tiny head off. My husband knew what the little guys fate was, so he busted him out of the cage and took off. He found out later that animal control had found him wandering around in a forest preserve where he had, obviously, been dumped by someone. You'd never know that our big, fat orange tabby started out as a tiny, scrawny, underweight wormy flea-bitten kitten.

Forest was rescued by our vet. Someone dumped him and his brother, Bubba, in a dumpster behind a pet store. The pet store owner found them and knew right away that something was wrong. The vet diagnosed both of them with cellebular hyperplasia. The pet store owner didn't think they would be able to find homes for them, so the vet took both in. Several months later I was there with my boys and fell in love at first sight. I talked my husband into adopting him as my first wedding anniversary gift. (Actually...I admit I lied. I told my husband that the traditional first anniversary gift is fur...and I only like fur when it's still breathing!!) There was good news for Bubba, too. He found a new home just a few days after Forest did.

Samwise is my rescue kitty. Somone dumped him in my cousin's neighborhood which isn't a very nice place. Well he was smart enough to wander onto my cousin's porch and start meowing. My cousin opened the door took one look at the poor little guy and brought him into the house and called me. As he gets older, I still can not understand why anyone would want to dump him. He's friendly and outgoing and a total love bug. At any rate, I'm glad he turned up he's definately been a blessing in mine and Gandalf's lives. Gandalf gained a playmate and I gained a precious little angel. Even he does have devil horns sprout up ocassionally.

He sounds like mine, I wonder sometimes if the rescued ones always have to keep a little edge cause they never know what will happen to them?

Cable's a rescue - some of you have probably heard her story, but for those who haven't, i'll tell it again. some kids on the playground at the school where i teach heard her crying & told their teacher. she went & picked up this tiny kitten out of the road & brought her to me... here is what she looked like then...

i took her home, to the vet, & she became a family member. this was in october. the vet guessed she was approximately 8 weeks old, so i have arbitrarily placed her birthday on August 17th. when i lost Mouse in December, i felt that God had sent Cable to Pixel & I to help us thru our grief. here she is today!

I kind of suspect that logan knows he is cute, because he must have used it as a survival skill.. I swear he does the "fall-over & knead nothing" thing cause he knows it will get him attention.... Must be how he begged for food when he was wandering around.

So many wonderful stories and photos!!Our Straya is an all white deaf persian cat that my husband and I rescued. She was sleeping in a dumpster where we are employed and eating whatever scraps of food that were tossed her way.
Poor little thing was out in the cold, frightened of people and had a bad ear infection. She would hiss and growl and didn't want anyone tp approach her.

I spent much time with her learning how to calm her and communicate.Today
she is a gentle, sweet and loving creature that I am proud to share my life with.

Ariel, our other cat (a calico/tiger mix) was adopted from a shelter, another treasure of ours!

Such wonderful stories! Thanks everyone for sharing.

My Lucky was a rescue. I was driving along a back road when this little ball of fur ran across the street. The car in front of me drove right over her...he didn't even stop. Luckily she froze and the wheels went on either side of her! I stopped and went to get her, she'd run down into the ditch and was hiding under the leaves. When i started towards her she ran to me and cuddled into my arms. She was about 4 weeks old and covered in burrs! Now she's 7 months old and is my little princess, who likes nothing better then to cuddle!
