Cj has been sick lately and I bought him a bed that had a zipper in the bottom for catnip. It looked like the most comfortable bed and I was going to throw the catnip away since it has never gotten a response. I tossed the 4 oz bag on the counter and was cutting the tags off his bed. I look up and who is it playing with the catnip? CJ! he wasnt in the amazingly glorious state everyone describles, but he was pretty gung-ho about it. I smelled it and it smelled a lot stronger than anyother catnip I have ever smelled. It is called SmartyKat catnip by world wise. (www.smartykat.com) it is organic too. I put it in a sock I have never found the mate to, and let him have it. he hasnt really bothered it much, but I will try again when he is feeling better.

Catnip grows wild on my property so I rarely need to buy it. I did find a product called Pawbreakers which is a condensed catnip ball held together with a gelatin type product. Now THOSE are very well loved in my household. I have to buy them by the case around here (online).

I have the Catnip Bubbles, my cat, Frodo is curious when he sees the bubbles, but I know some cats that chase them.

When I bought a cat toy it came with a bag of catnip. If he doesn't play with the toy or other toys, we just rub a little cat nip on it and he loves it.

What is the lifespan of catnip? Two years ago, I bought a catnip filled burlap bag toy and both cats still seem to go nutts over it. I know the catnip has dried out because the bag makes a crunching noise everytime they play with it.

One of the suppliers I buy from notes that a sample of catnip from 1910 was still getting a strong reaction from his company kitty in the 1990's...so...though I'd not want to buy 80 year old catnip
that says something!

Dang 95 year old catnip? I guess fine catnip could be like fine wine or cheese... gets better with age?

Do any of you have tips for growing catnip?
I have some seedlings that are coming up now - about a inch high.
Do I need to support them? (they look a bit floppy as they are getting taller...)
Any other tips for growing it in a chilly climate?
I have the seedlings in pots in a windowsil.
cheers all

Usually I just buy store brands that smell nice to me...

today I saw this package of catnip with a toy/container in it for 94 cents so i was like WOO cheap nip for the cats....

however it had a very funny smell to it.. very minty... elliot screwwed up his face at it and wasnt interested... not to mention it was very brown, and had either big chunks or powder.. most likely it was just what was left over and dried out of catnip processing.. gross.. i threw it away.. the ball (shaped like a heart) was good though, I stuck some chicken and cheese treats in there and made elliot mad because he couldnt get to them

I find the green stuff is the best... I wont ever buy the brown stuff again.. bleh.. brands dont really matter to me..
