HI...
My husband and I bought our girls a new kitten 2 days ago from a local pet store. When we looked at him he had some stuff in the corners of his eyes but the girl just told us that longer haired cats get that.
Well since he has been with us he has been sneezing and alot of watery eyes. He also just used the bathroom and it was runny and it had some blood mixed with it.
What could this be?
He plays fine and eats fine. But he does meow ALOT. And I know that may be from missing his brother and sister kittys but sometimes when he meows... it is like someone is killing him!!!! And nothing is happening to him at all.
Please ANYONE let me know what you think.
Thanks

I would get him to a vet as soon as possible!! My jessie had allergies and had some of the same symptoms minus the blood.
Please get him to a vet right away so they can see what's going on.

Because it is a pet store, there is a strong possibility your kitties were part of a kitty mill. Are they persians? Are they extreme persians?

Blood in the stool can be anything really for kittens and you are wise to take them to the vet.

The sneezing and the watery eyes sounds like an Upper Respitory Infection. Both my cats that came from the shelter had that. If that's what it is, its easily treatable with antibiotics but you do have to get him checked out to get the medicine. I am sure your little guy will be fine.

OKay everyone,
Thanks so much for all of your help.
I took him in this morning and the vet said his temp. was fine. He gave me an antibiotic and also some medicine (a cream) for his little eyes. Poor baby!!
His eyes already seem to feel a little better.
I also got a BIG SURPRISE at the vets this morning. My older cat (she is a year old) (her name is LILO) is going to have babies in about 3 weeks!!

I am so excited.

My girls are too. I grew up pretty much on a farm. We had atleast one of every kind of animal. LOL One of the most amazing things I have witnessed is a cat having babies. It is part of nature and it is something I want my 2 girls to expirience atleast once. After she has these though I will have her fixed.
Thanks again to everyone for your help.
Sarah

Oh my goodness! what a surprise about the pregnant cat!

I'm really glad you took the kitten to the vet, that was a very responsible decision.

Make sure, after she has the babies, that before her appointment to get spayed you keep her inside and away from any males that aren't neutered...she will get pregnant again soon after if you don't make sure she stays away from other males!

Oh.. ok so after she has the babies... I better not let her out until she is finished nursing and then I get her fixed? WOW.. I didnt realize she could get pregnant again so soon after. But then again... when it comes to that ... boy cats dont "play around" do they? LOL
I will be sure to follow your advice, I do not want her to have any more after this.
Thanks a million.

You're welcome. I rescued a cat once, and she was pregnant. She had the babies prematurely and none lived. I made an appointment to have her spayed a week or 2 after she had the babies...well, in the meantime (before the appointment) she got pregnant again. Yes, it is THAT fast! At the time I had no real knowledge of cats much, so I didn't know...I am glad I now know so that I can help others who do not know.

If you have any boy cats running around, please get them neutered. There truly is an epidemic of kittens in this world, and if your males are intact, they are part of the problem. If they are not yours, but strays, contact a feral cat rescue in your area and ask them for help trapping and neutering these boys-

Hey there HISSY,
Well I do have a new little boy kitten but he is only 8 weeks old. I do plan on having him neutered once he is of the age. There are quite a few boy "stray" cats running around here though. But the only place we have here is the animal control. (I live in a small town). Is that who I should contact?

1) a female cat can get pregnant with 2 seperate litters by two seperate (or the same I suppose) males at the same time. So they can have babies and then a week later pop out a few more.

2) you can have your cats fixed at 12 weeks so make the appointment now. Especially if he is going to be an outdoor cat. He will just add to the horrible overpopulation of cats in this world. There are cats dying in shelters because no one wants them, you certainly don't want to contribute to the problem and allow your cats to roam around intact, male or female.

When your cat has her babies, you have a lot of responsibility ahead of you. The momma will have to stay inside or else she will get pregnant again immediately. It is almost a guarantee that if she gets out and is in heat, she will come back pregnant. When the babies are the right age, they will need all their shots and please please be sure that they are fixed BEFORE they go to a new home. Or make the new owner signs a contract to have them fixed before letting them outside, and you can even offer to return the adoption fee if they prove that they do this. It is really important and you don't want your innocent little kitties to be having more and more babies when all those unwanted ones are being euthanized in the pounds.

Call your local shelter and tell them that you would like to trap the cats around you and fix them and id they can help at all. Or they maybe able to give you a few numbers of a rescue that may be willing to help. Make sure it is a NO-KILL shelter that you call.

Sorry if that sounded a little harsh but even I had no idea how bad the cat overpopulation problem was until I started to work at my local no-kill rescue shelter. It is unbelievable. Not only are the cats being dumped, abused, neglicted, tortured, left behind, etc, because their owners just simply don't care about them, but they are being allowed to roam unfixed and multiply like crazy and like someone else said, it is like an epidemic. It's a major problem and there are a lot of people out there trying to help fix the problem, which is not a simple (or cheap) thing to do.

Just have to add that I am so glad you did the right thing and took the kitten to the vet..and that he is feeling better..
And also to add that although you may not have realized at the time, its never a good idea to support pet stores.
As Hissy said, they often get kittens from kitten mills and puppies from puppy mills. Many pet store animals are therefore sickly.
Your story is unfortunately, a common one

Thank you so much for your helpful info.
It has helped me so much.
I do realize now that it was a bad idea to BUY a cat from a pet store. I felt bad for BUYING one anyways when there are so many out there for free that need homes too. But we always take our girls to LOOK at the pet store every Wednsday (that is my husbands only day off). And when we saw this little guy... he was so adorable. He looked at us with those eyes...(ya know those eyes that the cat PUSS gives SHREK) hehe.
My husband does not like cats. But even he said" AWW Sarah, look at that kitten. "He looks just like GARFIELD". So he had us at "hello". LOL
I knew something was wrong when after we paid she said that we had a 48 hour health gurantee.
Though I have learned I do not regret buying him. He has ... only in 4 days ... brought such much happiness to everyone here in my home. EVEN MY HUSBAND!!! He told me the second day..."Sarah .. see what you did.. you mad me like CATS" hehehehe
A new cat lover is born every day.

Another idea for ensuring the kittens are spayed and neutered:
Have the adopters pre-pay an exam, vaccines, and spay or neuter at a local vet. Then they can show you a copy of the invoice showing a credit on their account. You can even call your local clinics and let them in on your plan- they may even send some good clients your way!
