We had an escapee tonight - a kitten crawled half-way across the floor, and she started shrieking, and the other kittens were all in a pile shrieking back. Well, it made me think - do people keep their newborns in boxes? Right now they've been in a "sheepskin" cat bed, but now I'm wondering if I'm going to sleep if they (one) can crawl all over. It's just like having (non-fur) newborns all over again!

Congrats on your supermomcat, Elsa, and eight kittens! (I didn't know that a cat could have eight kittens) And thanks for posting the cute pics.

I use a large rubbermaid bin for momcats and kittens. The mom can either jump over the side, or in the top I have a hole cut so she can escape if she wants but the kittens can't

Heehee...

And now we understand the story I happened to see on FoxNews yesterday about a stray kitty who gave birth to her kittens up high in a hollow of a tree in Washington state! The residents couldn't figure out why this cat was climbing the same tree over and over again...until the kittens were old enough to start poking their little heads out of the top of the hollow. (They showed the kits in the tree....SO cute!) Oh yes, and now that the residents know that they are there, the whole community is helping to care for the little ones and Mama.

How adorable! The other part of MY story is that another household cat (neutered male) had gotten into the room and was near the escaped kitten trying to figure out what it was. (Is this a new toy for ME???) And mom was standing guard over the rest of the litter. We'll make sure that door is closed better now!

Yep, sounds like you may need a box with higher sides. We had one kitten we named for Sir Edmund Hillary (excuse the spelling if wrong) because at the age of one week she stood up - didn't wobble at all! - and at 2 weeks was climbing out of the box with 6 inch sides!
