I was wondering if any of you have any knowedge on any contagious diseases being passed on to a foster mommy. Our Rosebud gave birth to only one live baby 2 days ago and I would love for her to be able to foster stray newborns. My concern is that even if they test negative for leukemia/aids this could be a false negative because of mommy's antibodies, right? I really would like to help stray newborns with a kitty-mommy and her milk and provide her kitten with siblings yet what if she or her healthy baby got a fatal disease??? Thanks for your help!!!

I'm sure that someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the presence of anitibodies is what causes the positive reading, not the negative. You wouldn't have a false negative, you could have a false positive. Also, there is more a chance of your momma cat passing something on to babies, if she were sick, not the other way around. Talk to your vet, and ask for some contacts at different rescues, I'm sure your kitties "services" would be invaluable.

I have had ALOT of experience in this department. Running a cat rescue has shown me that there is nothing better for an abandoned kitten than to have a real feline momma to nurse and care for it. The last resort is always to hand raise. As mentioned above, there is a bigger possibility of momma passing something on to the kitten and not the other way around. I think you should definately contact your local no-kill cat rescues and see what they say. Personally, I have had nothing but success with this and believe me...right now your kitty may be in big demand! One more thing...kittens are best introduced to a queen who's kittens are no more than 1 week older or younger than the orphan(s). To be on the safe side, always check with your vet clinic first. Goodluck!!
