I have read the article on this site about introducing two cats. We did our best to keep the cats separate for as long as possible. The resident cat is a 6 month old female, Izzy (who is not spayed for medical reasons) and the new cat is an 8 month old (neutered) male, Fez.

We put them together tonight and all Izzy does is follow Fez around and bat at his tail and head-with her claws out. eventually he gets tired of it and hits back. How far do I let it go? Izzy usually hisses when it gets this far and then becomes very aggressive. Fez just does his best to ignore her.

The primary reason we got Fez was to keep Izzy company...now I feel like they are both miserable! Suggestions? Thanks!

I should also add that Izzy is about 1/2 the size of Fez...she was the runt. In general, she's not all that affectionate of a cat, especially to other people. She will let us pet her for a few minutes, but then it is done.

I don't know how long you kept them apart, but from what you are describing, it doesn't sound all that bad. Try the vanilla extract trick to keep the scents neutral- several times a day under their chin between their shoulders and on the base of their tail. Then just let them figure it out themselves. You don't have major bloodshed, screaming or airborne cats. Clip the tips of their claws to, just the bare tips
