Hello, I am new here... My 1 yr old cat LadyLeo had kittens this past Sunday. I found one dead this morning and now 2 of the other 3 are weak and seem to be not doing well... I called my Vet and she said there was nothing they could do ... I'm not sure how well they are nursing because they constantly move from one nipple to the next whining... I dont know what to do... I dont know if I can take losing another one. Please help.

Krislyn, I'm no expert, but there is a sticky thread at the top of the Pregnant Forum called kitten glop. Make yourself up a batch of this and maybe try helping mom out and try feeding them. Also in a pinch, I have read that baby formula can be used. You can feed them with a preemie bottle or eye dropper or something of the like. Good luck with the rest of your kittens!

...and as far as your vet is concerned... maybe you should try to call another. My Willow gave birth to a litter of 4 yesterday. She is having a lot of complications now and is at the vets as we speak. At any rate, you would think your vet would want to check and make sure the mom's milk is in. Our vet had to give Willow a shot of oxytocin today to help with her milk production. Try another vet. In the long run, the cost is worth it... if nothing else the office visit is around 25-30 dollars and the oxytocin shot another 20. That;s around here anyway... I wish you all the luck with your little ones! You're in my thoughts.

I also think you should try another vet. Having just gone through a similar thing I would say that the worst thing is to do nothing. This was my mistake. I would make the glop or get KMR and start feeding them by hand. My cat had two kittens 10 days ago and she seemed to not know what to do. They were born premature. She would not stay with them, and they cried alot. So I waited thinking that the mother knew what she was doing and one died. I was grief-stricken. I was lucky in that one of our friend's cat had just had kittens and she accepted the last kitten. Although still very small, Peanut is doing well and we are all hoping for the best. If I did not have that option I would have started hand feeding at that point. Sometimes the mother just does not know what to do.
I am not an expert like some of the others on this site, but having gone just gone through the same thing, I wanted to share my story to try to help out.

I will keep you, LadyLeo and the kittens in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted.

I Just Wanted To Write And Say That I Have Been Giving Kitten Formula As A Supplement And They Seem To Be Doing Alot Better.. I Am So Attached To Lady And Now Her Kittens.. As Far As The Vet, All Of Them Are In One Clinic Together And Ive Taken Her There Since She Was 4 Wks Old.. They Know Me And I Was Suprised That They Didn't Even Want Me To Bring Them In Til They Were 6 Wks Old.. I Will Be Finding Someone Else To Take Her & The Kittens... H

I Am Finding It Hard To Feed Them With The Bottle... I Wander If Anyone Could Give Me Some Ideas Of How To Make This Easier... Thanks

My guess is your hole in the nipple on the bottle isn't large enough. Use a hot needle to pierce it, and pierce it from both sides. Feed the kittens while they are on their belly, not their backs and please see the website memtioned www.kitten-rescue.com because your situation is exactly why tania and i built the website.

Well, I haven't slept much... I keep getting up to check on the kittens... They actually seem to be nursing but I can't tell if they are getting enough milk... How long do they normally nurse? They are still cryipng when LadyLeo gets up & they were sleeping cuddled up but seem to be spread out now... I'm really concerned about the black one, Chocolate. She had 4 kittens, Tigi who is black with grey striped legs, Beauty because she has a beauty mark like Cindy Crawford (also she looks just like a dalmation - so Cute! White with a few black spots) 2 solid black ones, Chocolate & Tootsie Roll. Tootsie Roll died this morning and Chocolate seems to be the weaker of the kittens now... I have been to the website but still I'm having a hard time bottle feeding... I can get them to pee. Early this evening it was yellowish gold color(amber) but tonight it is more clear, so maybe that is good.

Just wanted to update on the kittens .. they are a week old today and are doing great! They have round healthyd fat tummy's and are now nursing more than taking the supplement milk from a bottle. All are doing so great, I am so proud. We had a rough 3 or 4 days but survived.. I moved them into a corner in my bedroom close to the bed and Lady is doing much better with them since she can see me. She was real panicky for a few days whining at me constantly and thats why I moved them. She is nursing, cleaning and much more calm. Thanks for all the great advice. The website was very helpful and now we are in the process of trying to decide when is a good time to get her fixed. She already seems to be showing signs of heat but Im not really sure... But I don't think I can handle any more kittens.. this is our last... We have a male cat that lives outside because he is a little wild on the inside but I couldnt give him away because he loves my son so much. He will lay around with Ben sometimes when he comes inside but mostly wants to go back out. So we now have 5 in all counting the kittens so when is it ok after having kittens can Lady be fixed. Thanks

You can get her spayed now, her milk will drop in 24 hours after the surgery and she will be able to nurse again- GOOD JOB!
