Here's the deal. So, as you know, I am bringing home my spook on Saturday!
Ok, well he has a brother and a sister at the humane society that I adopted him from. Well, when I got him, the other two were on hold. Anyway, they are no longer on hold. In the meantime, this guy my friend knows has a black cat that just had kittens. They are currently 2 weeks old. I had told him that I would take one of the kittens and thought that could be a playmate for my new spook in a few weeks when they were ready to go home. Well, after all the stuff I have been through in the past two weeks with Punkin passing then this kitten that I found Monday passing, I am really concerned about this FIP. I spoke with my vet today and she said that she thinks I should adopt spook's brother or sister from the humane society instead of taking one from this guy. This guy that has the cat, found her outside and she has never been tested for FIV/FELV. Not to say that she is sick because she doesn't appear to be but I am a little worried. My vet said that she would feel more comfortable if I got the littermates from the humane society.
Now I feel like I am in a dilema....
How do I tell that guy that I no longer will take a kitten?
If I go up to the humane society tomorrow and both the brother and sister are still there, do I get both of them or just one of them?
How unfair is it if I only took one?

I am going to be moving to a new apartment soon and thought, maybe they would be less tolerant of 3 vs. 2 cats but then again, how much difference does 1 make?

Ugh, please post your opinions and advice for me. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks everyone..... I love you guys.

Like in the other thread i would take both brother and sister.
(only if the money permitted it even in your case with desexing and vaccinating and having money on the side incase they get sick ect...)
I would say let your friend know whats going on, maybe he will take his litter to the vet and get checked up.

Call the place where you are moving to and ask how many pets they allow.
Some houses dont allow pets at all. Or if they do they have a limit.

If you are going to only get one of the litter and have to leave the other one there.. i dont know i wouldnt be able to do it unless they promised that someone else will have the kitten asap.
You will feel bad, rotten and maybe not able to forgive your self, but you have to remember that all litters eventually split up, and there arent that many who stay together, unless you are crazy like me and let them breed and had a backyard full of family kitties hehe... Back to the point. All i can say is go with your gut feeling and i will keep you in my thoughts.

Your kitties' wellbeing is your first priority. If there are issues or potential issues with the health of this guy's kittens, that has to be a concern for you.

Since Spook has littermates who are also looking for a home, it seems to me that the most sensible thing would be to take at least one of them, preferably both, in order to let them all stay together, and let the guy know that this would have been your preference from the start had you known the other two would be available, so, with regret, you can't take his kitten.

If he is unhappy about that, you could point out the health issues and your vet's recommendation that you take Spook's littermate(s) rather than his kitten.

Thanks for the advice... I am not sure where I am moving yet but no matter what, my kids are priority so I guess if they wouldn't accept them all, I wouldn't move there.
I know. I am not sure that I can leave one behind. UGH!!!!
I will let you know what happens after I see them tomorrow morning.

in your situation, I'd take spook and be happy i have him. not every cat needs a playmate, did you see him interact with his litter mates, were they best friends or just hung out together? when i bought Marsh, he had 3 litter mates, but i didn't want all 4, or even 2, i wanted MARSH!
He was THE ONE
you should not feel bad about not taking the others, they will find homes on their own too

all in all, I'd call the apartment place first to find out how many you can bring. Also, did you want one cat or more? Do not take on more cats than you can handle, just out of pity.

good luck!

You are right. To be honest, I didn't know much about this FIP, FIV stuff up until about a month ago. For 17 years I just had my jessie. My vet and I believe that Punkin and that kitten I had found outside both had FIP. Now, I don't know the mom of the kittens at the humane society but all 3 look really healthy to me. Course, I know that is not a guarantee but you know what I am trying to say.
In completely honesty, I really planned on only having 2 kitties for right now for one more year until I buy my house. But, I just don't know if I can leave one behind!!!!!!

i'd take your friends kitten and leave the siblings to get adopted at the shelter together.

my reasoning behind this is that if the other kitten is 2weeks old you have 10 weeks to bond with spooky before you bring another kitten home. plus if this guys cat is a rescue cat (he found her outside right?) your still helping cats.

the shelter will screen potential owners but would this guy you know do the same? you can pretty mch guarentee that the kittens at the shelter will go to (potentially) loving homes as most places insist on a home check but you cant say the same about the other kittens.

plus the guy you know might let you help with the socalisation of his litter so you can guarentee (as mch as you can with these things) a well adjusted kitten

but if you do get the other kitten take it to the vet for a check asap

First of all, thank you to everyone for being here for me and giving me your opinions. I want you to know how much that means to me.

I took my girlfriend with me this morning and we went to the shelter. I got to see my little spook!!! He was so funny, he came in and laid by me like, "yea i know you are taking me home so i dont have to try to impress you, i can just love on ya." It was too funny. They brought in his brother (Ace, black and white) and his sister (Aurora, black with a spot of white). Well, someone had called to look at Ace and were coming in today later. But I still had all of them in the room together. I tell ya, I love all kitties so no matter what, it's hard for me to have to pick from any of them. Anyway, Aurora was such an independent girl, she got right in there with her brothers and played, it was too funny. She is such a stinker!!! Ace was such a doll. He played as well and batted the ball around in the room. Me and my friend sat on the floor and just laughed watching them. They were jumpin in the air and just going crazy. It was awesome watching them play. They heard a dog barking outside the room and you should have seen Aurora's hair just stand up on her back!! It was sooooo cute! I really loved them both. So, I ended up adopting Aurora today and told the girl that if those people don't come for Ace, I am coming back to get him. I bring Spook home on Saturday. Aurora gets her surgery on Tuesday and I bring her home on Wednesday. Knowing me, if Ace is there Saturday morning, I will more than likely just adopt him then. It was hard for me to make a decision and I hope you guys understand and don't think that I am a bad person for making a choice today. I am sitting here
while I write this. I was sad about all the other kitties in there too. There were 8 more different ones in the shelter.
Please tell me I am not a bad person. I feel happy to bring my kids home but soooo sad that I made a choice.

Thanks to all of you for listening to me. I really appreciate it.

I agree, it sounds like Spook and Aurora are about to start a loving lifelong journey.
I know the decision was hard, but I think you are doing what is best, and those kitties left at the shelter will all go to good homes to.

Hopefully Ace will go to an awesome home, and if not I think its great that you're considering taking him too!

Don't stress yourself out too much worrying about that kitten. Just because you didn't adopt Ace doesn't mean that he will have a hard life. Look how many people are interested in him, he will more than likely have a good life even if you don't adopt him. Or you could still adopt him.

Not to say I don't understand your feeling sad, but you're getting two wonderful sounding kitties! Thats awesome.

Aww dont feel bad!! If youre meant to have all of them ace will still be available when you go back!
Finnegan had a brother with him in the humane society when I got him and i would have LOOOVED to bring him home too but my mom would have crapped if i'd come home with two kitties! lol Pluuuusss he was being mean to poor Fin and I didnt like that
I can't wait to move out. John is afraid of how many cats are going to be around! hahaha I told him everytime he makes me mad or upset I was going to go and save a kitty. tee hee hee

Thank you. I sure hope so. I worry so much about kitties. It's not that I don't like him or anything like that, but until I get a house of my own and am still renting, I would like to just have 2 kitties then once I get a house next year I will have many more.
Wish I could take them all home.

Of course you liked him!
I think I fall in love with every cat I meet (often ones that already have owners!). But you can't adopt them all -- and think how unfair it would be to the cats you have if you tried to cram too many into a small space. I live in a two bedroom apartment so I limit myself to two as well.

Don't worry, I'm pretty sure no one here thinks you didn't adopt Ace because you didn't like him.

Thanks hon. You must think I am crazy for not being happy that I am bringing my kids home soon but I let my love for kitties get the best of me everytime. I swear they just tug on my heartstrings. That had to be hard on you too. I know that realistically litters get broken up all the time but I just can't make myself focus on that. All I could think is that he is thinking, "What about me?"
Course, then I think that all the others in there are thinking the same thing!

I am sorry for being so depressed on here, I can't help it. I hope you all understand.
I am trying to pull it together but I am having a hard time.
Good idea, John might have his hands full!

I decided on names and I did some changing around..... my boy is going to be Salem and my girl is going to be Spook.
So, Salem comes home Saturday morning.... and believe me, I will be all about getting those pics of him posted! Then I get to pick up Spook on Wednesday since her surgery isn't until Tuesday.

Thanks so much for being here for me.

Man, I am so glad you understand. I don't know why but I just feel like a bad person inside but you know what I mean.
Yes, that's true. I live in a one bedroom place right now then I am going to renting a new place soon (not sure where yet) then after another year, I am saving to buy a house.

Thanks for the hugs, I needed that!! Man, I wish I did. I am going to try and get my mom to ask around at her work. I would even be willing to adopt him and pay the fees if someone was interested that could give him a good home.
I am going crazy!!! I wish tomorrow was Saturday! It almost was harder that I went up and seen Salem today because I hated leaving AGAIN! The Humane Society I am getting them from is in Findlay which is about 26 miles from my house. So, I think on Wednesday when I get to pick up Spook, I am going to take Salem along for the ride..... that way, he gets to ride home with his sister and he gets used to taking rides in the carrier without being scared.
I hope tomorrow just flies bye. I want to just wake up and it be Saturday!
