I was in panic mode tonight!

As some of you know, I allow Red Cat and Purdy outdoors daytime only, since both had lived outdoors for months or years before they joined me and were totally unhappy kept inside. But I was going to try to keep Sheba as an indoor cat. Since she was younger (age 1-2) when I got her, I thought she would adjust better than the boys would have.

Well, while letting the boys back in this afternoon, she shot out the door. She's done this before, but most times has either not stayed out long, or just hung around the porch. But this time she disappeared. Of course, this was the night I had a meeting to attend. I called and called. Finally, just as I decided I was going to have to leave for the meeting, I saw an eagle on the tideflats just below my house. And he was eating something black. This woman went into panic mode!

I got out my binoculars to see if I could tell what he was eating, but I couldn't tell. So I took my binoculars and went outside to the edge of the yard above the bulkhead and looked. Still couldn't tell what he had, but I did scare him enough that he lifted his victim, and made a big circle in the sky, but it was getting dark enough that I was unable to tell much except the prey was black or dark and had at least two legs; it obviously wasn't a fish. He disappeared. There was nothing more I could do. I was already late for my meeting. I got my keys and opened the front door to go to my car. And there on the front steps was Sheba! I'd been calling her for two hours and had looked on the front steps a dozen times. At least I got her in before I left for my meeting.

My baby is safe and sound. And I love her more than ever.

How scary!
I'm so sorry you had to go through such fright! I'm really glad you found your baby. I can't even begin to imagine your relief.

Wow, that is quite the scare... Hopefully the eagle didn't get someone else's cat.
Though it might have been a rabbit or something... Anyway, glad to hear she's safe and sound.

Dont you just love when they do that? You are so happy to see that they are ok, but you want to choke them at the same time for scaring you to death. Its just like if a child disappeared.
I am glad she is ok. She definitely would have gotten a lecture from me!

It was more than likely a crow. The crows often try to harass the eagles to scare them out of the area, and usually they get away with it since they are much more maneuverable than an eagle. But it only takes one misturn. I've seen it happen before.

At my meeting last night one of the other members said her neighbor was continually having a problem with the eagles trying to dive down after her two small dogs in the back yard about a mile from here. Thankfully, she had a screened enclosure for the dogs, but the eagle still terrified them, of course.

I would have panicked, too. A few years ago, while visiting my parents, I heard an ungodly scream from one of the neighbors, and looked up just in time to see an eagle carrying off her little lap dog! If I have Jamie outside, and hawks or buzzards start circling, I pick him up and run inside now.

I don't know how large a cat or dog an eagle might try to take, but I worry more about Sheba than the boys. She's only a fraction of a pound lighter than Purdy, but she looks so much smaller than he does, since he has long hair and she is very sleek. Red Cat is heavier.

My boys tend to head for the woods, rather than the open area most of the time, and with the thick underbrush, they would have plenty of cover from an eagle there. The bigger danger there is a coyote, and we do have those in town.

Worse yet, last night at my meeting one of the ladies said they had a cougar in their yard last week right on the outskirts of town. That's a few blocks from one of our schools and only about three miles from me.
