Hi All,
I'm thinking about adding a companion cat to the household. My 10 year old female cat has been periodically pulling out her hair since her buddy Sparky the cat passed 4 years ago. What is the best route to go for a companion cat? Adult female? My cat seemed to dominate Sparky (male cat) - but they played, groomed, slept and ate together - and only occassionally got into squabbles. I'm afraid of territory issues (marking) or possibly making her even more stressed. What have you experienced with bringing a new cat into the household?

I bring in foster cats all the time and my cats go OK with it. Since you cat last companion was a male I would get a male again, if you get a female she may feel more like she is being replaced.

Someone at the Humane Society had told me that a male cat might be too playful for her. Would you say that it all depends on the cat? Maybe fostering would be the way to go for me...and then a potential adoption?

It all depends on the cat, Sturgis is of the wall, where as Milo is as laid back as they get. Fostering would work, but I would go for one younger than her.

When I got my female cat, my male cat took to mothering her. That same person at the humane society said that males tend to be more mother like to kittens than females do. Have you heard of this before? My cat is shy to outsiders but extremely affectionate with me. Is she too old for a kitten? Would it be too playful for her? I suppose it's hard to say unless I see her interact with one.
