Nerina, the wily pregnant feral has dissapeared..I assume she gave birth sometime last week, unfortunatly I hadn't been able to locate their lair.
Yesterday another hard feral started acting friendly, today I could pet her and felt her tummy (I expected her to take off but she purred and rubbed against me) and her nipples are swollen, but not taut like during pregnancy.
How can I tell if she's nursing? I know what the nipples look like when nursing, fur crusty around the edges, but this one has soft big nipples hanging.
Would that mean she's is over nursing a litter? I'm doing more trapping but didn't want to get her until she's weaned her litter..there are 2 intact females yet and 1 tom. I keep seeing toms here and there and this morning their alley really stank of territorial marking. I'm afraid they are after more than the females

I saw the biggest tom ever, he had no ears wich didn't help his bulky look..

Locating feral litters is always difficult. They hide them well, and if they think you are even looking they start moving the nest one kitten at a time, which sometimes means you might find some of the kittens, but not all. If I can't trap them and bring them inside when they are pregnant, I leave them be (outside) until after they have their babies then they end up bringing the babies to the food source when the kittens are old enough. That's just what I do.There is to much fear that the kittens will not all be located and a few will starve to death.

Thanks for your reply Hissy and sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner..actually I had no idea what to do if I found the kittens..we've always taken them when they are weaned and the mothers bring them to the food dish.
To take the pregnant ferals in would be ideal but I don't have the facilities so I let them be or sad as it is (tho probably is best for them) I've the vet to terminate the pregnancy & the mother spayed if she's in the early stages.
Never had a very pregnant feral walk in the trap, now there is one that could be, another that looks pregnant but not sure..
I don't like it but if a late term pregnant feral is trapped, would it be much of a shock for her to have an abortion? And how long would she take to recover?
If I let her out to have her kittens, wouldn't she be awfully trap wise afterwards? (probably a stupid question but I want to make sure)
I'm starting to think that one that I though was female is really a male or an sterile female b/c 3 of her siblings showed birth defects when vetted, she should have gotten pregnant by now & doesn't seem to be, also she was the runt of the litter (looks like a Munchkin) a wonder that survived.. I hope to trap her so the mystery will be solved..

It is best to abort. That really breaks my heart to say, but it is the truth. The cats recover within 3-4 days. Only your vet can make the determination to if he will do the spay or not. It is an individual choice. Mine do them all the time at my request, he understands the odds against the litters-
