hello!
i recently got blue and i am having a lot of trouble getting him to pee/poop in the litter box. here is a little history: (sorry this is a bit long!!)

he has had Urinary tract infection throughout these weeks. the vet gave him antibiotics for the first three weeks, then checked in 3 weeks to see if he was doing better. turns out the antibiotic wasn't strong enough so he had to switch the antibiotics. he also witched to a food that
first week: blue pees and poops at random places in the house
second week: Blue pees and poops sometimes in the litterbox, sometimes in the house somewhere.
third week(first half): i lock blue in the bathroom with the litterbox and he poops in the litterbox and pees in the shower
third week (2nd half): blue poops by our door to show us he has tape worm, next day poops in the living room and has diarrhea. now he is better, but when i locked him in the bathroom today, he pooped next to the litterbox!!

please help!! i am very confused
i have added another litterbox which he does not use, i added cat attract to no avail. i'm at the end of my wits!
i read that you can train them by putting them in the litter box after they eat/drink. i did that for a while but he didn't quite get it. plus sometimes he bites my hand when i try to pick him up. PLEASE HELP!!

thanks you guys...

Throw out the original litter pan and buy a brand new one. Also there is a possiblity he still has a low-grade infection and should go see the vet just to be safe.

Amy, I have to agree with hissy here, even if he doesn't still have an infection, he may be associating the pan that you have with the pain he experienced when he did have it. Try a new one, it can't hurt, lol! And like humans, sometimes a UTI can be hard to get rid of, especially one that was really bad before it was treated.

I agree and if getting a new box doesn't work, try a litter called Dr. Elsley's Cat Attract. Also try some Feliway calming spray...you can find them both at PetSmart. Make sure to thoroughly clean the areas where he went since they will keep going outside the box if they can smell it. Cody was peeing all over the place in my old house...even when the UTI was treated with antibiotics. But the combination of these two products and locking her in my bedroom with her box for a week got her back on track.
Good luck

hi all!
thank you guys so much for your help! so in the past couple of days i have used a new litter box (which Blue used), feliway, and cat attract. he was good and used the litterboxes when we are in the house, but when we go to sleep or go out he always has accidents!! Please help! is the only solution to lock him in the bathroom with the litterbox when we're not here?

Maybe he is stressed and needs a companion- perhaps another cat would help? Hard to say-

i put blue in the bathroom last nite, and this morning he was meowing at the top of his lungs. i opened the door and ends up he had peed in the litter box, knocked the trashcan over, peed on that too.
by the way, the litter we use is an organic clumping flushable litter. does that have anything to do with anything? the first day we got blue we had a cheaper, arm and hammer, non flushable litter. it was very dusty so we switched. however, the first day he went to the litter box on his own after we showed him. would it be too confusing to switch? what do you guys think about litter with crystals?

just keeping you guys updated. i cleaned it with knock out and feliway...

Yeah, good thing to do is use that Dr. Elsley's Cat Attract kitty litter with half of your current litter brand. This leaves the scent of his previous kitty litter and pee. One of the vets I went to suggested the Cat Attract. And this did work for Cody before. Is he still on the antibiotics for the UTI? Sometimes that takes a few weeks to really go away. Keeping him in the bathroom with his litterbox and food will help retrain him. I also gave Cody treats after every time she used the box as a reward. Let us know how he's doing.

good news everyone!!
I don't want to get my hopes up too quickly, but i think i might have finally solved the problem! I was talking to my neighbor Tim yesterday, and he said that most cats hate organic litter! i don't know why the litter factor didn't occur to me before. So, i mixed in some arm and hammer crystals litter and Blue has used the bathroom 3 times since. I am so happy right now (finger crossed he won't have another accident!) I also bought a feliway plug in. That might have helped too

Thank you guys for all your help! i will keep you updated
