A couple of weeks ago, Bella was doing the booty scoot and I read about it in my cat book, so knew it was off to the vet right away to get her anal glands expressed. Boy was she cranky when she got home, but next day was back to her sweet self.
Today, she came to wake me up this AM and when I was watching her, she booty scooted on the bed .. like she was trying to tell me it was bothering her again. I tried to touch her bum to see and she really meowed at me and tried to swat my hand. So.. back to the vet.

I know impacted anal glands are fairly uncommon in cats (according to vet) and thought we just were unlucky a couple weeks ago. But now twice in 2 weeks? Anyone else had this type of thing regularly happening.. ?

My boy Dexter's scent sacks (anal glands) plugged up when he was just a few months old. They were infected & he was treated with antibiotics. Now...several years later, they only have to be expressed about every 6 months & they have not become infected again. I think that 2 weeks is to soon for them to fill up again. Maybe the problem was not resolved the first time. If you do not get resolution with your current vet soon, you may need to get a 2nd opinion. Please send me a PM & let me know how your kitty is doing. Dexter's scent sacks are always a concern to me. Thanks

My Abbie is in the same situation. I noticed her scooting right before her annual visit. The vet expressed her glands and they were full - and it was kind of pasty instead of runny the way it should be. He suggested a re-check a month later, but 3 weeks later I noticed she was scooting again - so in for another visit. The technician expressed her anal glands - and again they were pretty full and still pasty. So, we are on a monthly check schedule. Abbie does not like it, but until we can get the glands to express normally, this is what we have to do. It sounds like Bella is in the same boat with Abbie. Keep on top of it - you don't want them to become infected because that is, as my vet expressed it, a real pain in the butt.

I did not know that scent sacks filled up so quickly. Please...keep us posted on "boot scooters" progress.

Hi all
Just a quick update on my cutie pie.. The vet was not sure why her rear end was still so irritated and wanted a stool sample. The results came back yesterday and she is digesting lots of hair. This apparently can cause the anal glands to become irritated and constipation as well.
So the diagnosis was brushing regularly and the problem should nicely relieve itself. So far she is doing great.
Bella was so excited to be brushed and I took 4 brush fulls of hair off of her last night
She is a medium haired cat too, so I should have been brushing her.. I just didnt know.
