I got a goldfish recently, and I use a 5 gallon. (He's really small and I saved him from a carnival) Its filtered. To clean, take out half the water, put in conditioner according to size, and wipe of the items inside.
Sounds like you have an algae problem. You may want to invest in an algae eater (that's a fish that kind of resembles a cat fish but they eat algae even off the sides of the tank) or snails. My sister gave me ONE snail back in 1996 or 1997 and I NOW have many, many more generations of snails!!Originally Posted by fwan
My tank keeps on going green with in two weeks, well thats about when youre suppoed to clean it anyway, but i couldnt find my thing to take the green stuff off the glass so i use a toothbrush. Later on in the year i will upgrade my tank, or in the new house because i find my filter very crappy.
I'm not sure if you can do this where you are from...Originally Posted by hunny01

When the number of snails was countable, I used to take out the snails as not to accidently syphon them out while cleaning the tank. I was sad one time when I had to treat the tank with medicine because the fish were sick. It killed all of snails. Well, actually ONE snail lived and reproduced and so on. After a while, I didn't care if the snails suctioned out with the syphon. I know that sounds mean but those snails need a spay/neuter program!!Originally Posted by hunny01

It really depends on the type of snail. If you find one that will take common pond snails (which is what usually hitchhikes in on plants) let me know! Pond snails can reproduce hermaphroditically, so you only need ONE to end up with a population explosion. I got rid of them at one point by putting in a trio of clown loaches. I never saw another snail, until the clown loaches unfortunately succumbed (along with everything else in the tankOriginally Posted by ash_bct

Rather than get rid of your snails, most pet places that sell fish will buy them from you.Its something worth looking into!
I think I used [font=Arial,Helvetica]erythromycin to treat the tank. It's been almost 10 years so I'm not 100% sure. All I know is I treated for hole-in-the-head and ick.Originally Posted by hunny01
yeah i used to be like you, i used to feel guilty when we cleaned the tank out and the snails were washed down the sink...............now i really dont give a toss....they are soooooooo annoyin....they totally cover the glass on my tank so you can hardly see the fish!
