Well put, Katie.
I have to agree with you. Even some of my favourites (i.e. Oasis) completely and so obviously lift from other musicians. There is little originality these days, because it's ALL been done, in one way or another (oops, just ripped off Blondie!
).

People say Green Day... I say The Ramones. People say Moby... I say Kraftwerk. People say Jessica Simpson... I say name any one-hit wonder bimbo from the 80s! You get the picture...

I really wish I was born earlier. Almost every single band I listen to has retired or split up due to a death. Grateful Dead (Jerry), Allman Brothers (Duane Allman), The Who (Keith Moon and John Entwistle), The Doors (Jim Morrison), The Beatles (John Lennon and George Harrison), Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix....

the list could go on and on....

Look at all the greats there was back then.. What true talent does my generation have to show for itself? Britney Spears? Ashley Simpson?

I weep for the future.

Hmmm...

Alice In Chains, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins (old Pumpkins, before Billy started kicking people out of the band), The Misfits, and Nirvana.

I agree. Rob and I just discussed this... We grew up with Grunge: AIC, NIN, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, ect. Early Weezer too. It seemed there was more talent there, than now. Heck, we had Billy Corgan, a guitar genius, Eddie Vedder, the late Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain. Trent Reznor, Scott Weiland. I mean, music was good. It wasn't perfect, it wasn't as original as the original rockers (The Who, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith) Ect. But it was good. Now its crap.
Rob brought up that even some of the more one hit wonder types were better. Like Better than Ezra 'Good', Candlebox, Collective Soul, ect. Nirvana has been replaced with NSync, and instead of fairly good one hit wonders, we get crap like that Carter kid. Everyone sounds the same.

And hey, what ever happened to a good guitar solo???? What ever happened to good guitars period? And good lyrics, complex ones, not self centered egoism.

Despite the duds, I think there is some very good talent now (The Strokes, The White Stripes, Interpol, Coldplay), but would agree that even they, to some degree, are reproductions of past musical geniuses. Though I'm not too keen on them, the most original band I've seen lately is Outkast, but like others, all their songs sound alike.

As for grunge, though it was original for the TIME, again, it was a repeat of previous generations, namely punk. They played power chords, like punk rockers did. No big whoop as far as I was concerned. Just a BIG change from the hair metal bands and one-hit wonder notoriety of the late 80s.

And while I'm at it, I so SICK of all the BS surrounding Courtney Love killing Kurt Cobain and still hearing about it 10 years later. What a load of crap! He had a death wish (and I KNOW because I've experienced suicides in my family). It's just because she was a STRONG female in what is still a man's world that she was incriminately labelled. No wonder the woman is a mess.

Though I'm not too keen on Eminem's music, his lyrics are intelligent enough to make you think and are certainly fitting for the times.

Hallelujia and amen, Sister Grissom. I too am a child of grunge. I had so many flannel shirts that my mother worried about me. hehe
My BF and I talk about this alot...the death of good music in the 00's.... We have come to the conclusion that stuff works in cycles. You had the 80's junk (not all was bad, but there were some real stinkers back then) and the 90's stuff was sort of a backlash on the stinky mainstream of the 80's. It then became mainstream and we got junk like Creed and Nickleback (sorry if I offend anyone, but I really don't like them).
I think the scene will come back around once people get tired of stuff that all sounds the same.

For some good guitar stuff, check out Queens of the Stone Age and The White Stripes. Very different, but both good. Josh Homme and Jack White can play their butts off, and they sound so distinctive that you have no doubt about who you're listening to. JMHO.

I had forgotten about the Smashing Pumpkins. They were great. I love the Goo-Goo Dolls, too.

I agree that Coldplay is pretty original in this day and age but disagree that all the Outkast songs sound alike. I just don't like all their different styles, but they are original in my opinion.

Speaking of White Stripes you have seen the Punk Kittens video, haven't you? I can't link it because I'm at work and it's firewalled here. I bet someone will find it before I get home tonight.

Wow, I see all these names that my daughter talks about - how old does that make me feel
I do like listening to her music though
. She goes to the Leeds Festival - a music weekend here in England - this is the lineup for this year

I did see Axel Rose live at the Riverbend Festival when we happened to be in Chattanooga one of the nights it was on. So we paid for a one night ticket.

It's so funny that y'all say that...We thought the same thing, only we're children of the 80's. Sure, there was some crap out then, just like there was in the 60's, 70's, 90's, 00's and will forever be.
But there were a lot of good bands then too. There was a lot of talent, even if the lyrics weren't out to save the world. Life was a good time in the 80s, and the music reflected that. Then apparently everyone got depressed as soon as Nirvana came out.
Don't get me wrong, Soundgarden was AMAZING! Pearl Jam had some really good stuff. Alice in Chains was pretty good. But overall, grunge wasn't all that and a bag of chips to me. It was a change, and overall it was probably needed to bring life back to rock/metal, but it wasn't all good.

Personally, I don't like the direction Metal is going in now because I think the vocalist should do more than growl... I like some kind of melody.

I'm not sure that it was so much that everyone got depressed in the 90's, or that it was just a natural progression from the materialism and hair metal of the 80's. (Don't get me wrong; there was some really good stuff that came out in the 80's.) Although 90's pop was every bit as bubbley as 80's pop.

I agree about the growling metal singers...you can't understand a d@mn word they say, it's monotone and they all sound the same.
Eh, it'll all come around again eventually...I hope.

It's interesting that no one here has mentioned much rap or hip-hop, as big as those genres are right now.

Depends on what metal you are listening to.... "bands" such as korn, lincoln park, and all those new metal bands make me sad.

Both the new Metallica (St. Anger) and the new Megadeth (The System Has Failed) are amazing. I've seen Metallica twice and Megadeth once and they always put on a great show. Two newer metal bands that I think are good.. In Flames, Children of Bodom. Saw them both as well and they put on a great show too.
