excited volunteer

I am really excited about next week. I have been looking for a way to volunteer in my community ever since I graduated from college. When I was a student volunteering my heart and soul. I was involved in a community organization called 'Cirlce K' (part of Kiwanis if you've heard of them), and I missed it dearly after I graduated and started putting in my time working in the real world.

Its been tough finding my outlet to volunteer since graduating. But I finally have! After adopting Lilly, I decided I wanted to put my time in helping all the HART kitties find new homes. Starting next week I will be going into our local Petsmart on Thursdays and helping to play with the kitties, clean their cages, and answer questions of prosepctive adoptees.

I go for training on Monday and then Thursday is my first day alone. I can't wait to use all the knowledge I've gained from TCS to help me with this, and I can't wait to help find homes for all the awesome cats at HART.

Beryl,

How nice of you and I'm jealous. I've always wanted to do something like that but I'm afraid that I'm pretty weak and know that I would have t0 cats instead of 5 Keep us updated on how you like it.

i think i am happy with just my two babies. It will be hard to not want to bring them all home. But with our space, and money situation there will be no more kitties at this time. So I want to do my good deed and help find wonderful homes for lots of them!!

I found out today, I will be going to an adoption event this Sunday to help out, and get in my training. I can't wait!

That's great

This Petsmart, do they sell the kittens, or they just host HART's kittens?

My reasoning too!
But seriously Beryl, that is so awesome. Hopefully you can help others learn what the joys of being owned by kitties! AND you can tell them all about how fun TCS is, too!
Can't wait to hear more about your volunteering adventures with HART!

Well they host HART's kittens and cats, and then HART takes in the applications and decides who gets to buy them.

Ashburn is probably right about 2 hours away from C-ville. My college roommate lives down there and I have visted UVA many times, so I know that area well too. Might be a little far to come drive up to just look at the kitties, but if your sister ever comes up to the malls in NoVA (like Tysons corner), then it would be a lot closer.

Well I am off to Petsmart in just a little bit. Today is a HART adoption day. I am so excited to help with finding these babies homes! I was in Petsmart last night buying some things for Lilly and Ebony, and about 3 new kitties had just arrived. One really caught my eye. I am now seeing how hard this is going to be to not take them all home with me. Hopefully we'll find lots of homes for these babies today.

Well I survived!! (just barely though...I want to take all of the babies home with me!!) Here is the website for HART in case anyone is interested in seeing the babies I am working with.

HART Website

Today I basically helped with setup, learned the ropes for my cleaning and socializing duties Thursday nights, met some of the fosterers and volunteers, and talked to some prospective adopters.

Right now there are about 8 cats being housed at Petsmart, and 5 others come to the adoption event from Foster homes. Two of the little girls I was ready to adopt by the end of the day (Tasha was one, she is on their website). Then one of the other girls looks JUST like Ebony.

Today was a slow adoption day because the weather was gorgeous here. Everyone one playing outside instead of looking at kitties inside Petsmart. There was one girl though who filled out an application to adopt one of their cats (slyvia) whose been in foster care for a very long time. I hope that adoption works out.

So that was that. I purchased my HART volunteer T-shirt today, and I am ready to go. One of the adoption coordinators is hoping to give me the power to do prospective adopter interviews. That may start in the next few weeks after I am more comfortable with my duties cleaning cages and showing the cats.

It was overall a good time. I'll let you know how things go again after my shift Thursday night.

Tonight I go and visit the kitties at Petsmart. I need lots of good vibes that I remember all my duties and that I can do my job with no complications. I'll let you know how it goes later tonight!

This is great! I took a look at the website and YUP you are certainly going to need those willpower vibes I saw about 5 kitties that I would have in a heartbeat and Cinnamon is just the cutest - no willpower whatsoever on my part . Wonder if HART would ship to Europe

Good luck!

Yep Beryl, that's how it starts!

I started by volunteering at dog adoption events (since I'm not home nearly enough to own a dog, I got my "fix" that way).

Then they asked me to foster a litter of kittens last summer.

Then I had my feral babies.

Now I'm currently fostering some rescue kittens.

I'm also working with others to TNR the colony where I got the feral kittens.

It all starts innocently enough..."I'm just going to volunteer at adoption events"...

Seriously, though, have fun! I agree, Tasha is adorable!

haha, yeah, i think I am on a course that could end up like yours. I would love to foster maybe 1 or 2 of the HART cats, but right now in my 1 bedroom apartment its not feasible. Maybe after I move into my townhouse though.

Last night was hard. Some of those babies have been in their cage since I adopted Lilly last month. I hope they get out soon. And then one of the girls (Calsey) is just the sweetest thing. She has such a great tempermant. I wish I could bring her home.

I just have to keep telling myself though that they are all going to go to great homes, with families that love them, and I just need to keep giving them the love and attention they deserve while they're at Petsmart.
