Well, I really started a messed up thread. Sorry about that!
Not necessarily! Our county (in Germany) requires that all dogs be licensed, and thus they're given a number, and the owner's name and address are recorded. This is for tax purposes, as a dog tax of about €90 up to about €1,000, depending on the breed and/or town, has to be paid annually. This doesn't apply to cats yet. (€1 = c. $1.30).
Both dog and cat owners currently have the option of having their pet tattooed and/or microchipped, and those numbers, along with a description of the pet and the owner's name, address, telephone number(s) and email address are entered in one of two national registers, or both, if you prefer. This has nothing to do with the pet being pedigreed, but serves to identify lost or abandoned pets.
Microchip (transponder) numbers, plus the pertinent data, can also be entered in a European register, for a small fee. This is also for identification.
At present, all dogs, cats, and ferrets crossing European borders have to be registered in this manner. The plan is to make it mandatory for all pets, even within national borders, to prevent people from abandoning their pets.

Here in New South Wales Australia were Iam living it is a legal requirement to have both cats and dogs microchipped and registered. The local shire council is were you register them, it costs $38 dog or cat each one for life (desexed). More for undesexed animals. It costs from $20 - $50 to microchip a dog or cat depending on were you get it done (vet or RSPCA) and how many at one time (litters). All mine, 2 dogs and 4 cats are done because allthough they are house and lead only if they escape or get let out I can be found. When I lived in W.A it cost $38 for three years and cats dont need to be registered. Microchipping was not a legal reqierment either.

There is no license here for cats, but mine are microchipped, ready to travel to the EU with me when I finally return home!

Where I live you don't have to register cats, just dogs. All of my cats are chipped though.

I'm not really sure what you mean, but my cats are registred in basically every way they can be registred
They're registred in an official cat organisation since they're both purebred and both av them are microchipped and registred in the national identification registry for cats. It's a one time cost and them being in the identification registry means that I can be found and contacted if they would run away.

There's no place like home
I don't bother because I know that most of the animal control agencies around here don't have the equipment to scan them if they were lost, and most stay inside anyway. If I ever move into a city I may do it.

Cat's dont need to be licensed here either, but dogs are. You get a discount if they are spayed or neutered. You can go to your state's Department of Argiculture to find out what the laws are in your area... including but not limited to: ferrets and snakes

...one more thing:
Here, most vets have the capability to license your dog for you. And I believe PetSmart does also. Also (now) the PA Department of Agriculture website has a PDF form to print, fill out and mail in yourself. Makes life much easier!

Now if only they could cut out the trip to the mail box :lazy:

I'm planning to move to Cleveland, Ohio in October, and know I'll have to get Presh licensed...but I'm not sure about Mashie. I haven't been able to find out anything pertaining to cats.
If anyone here DOES happen to know, I'd appreciate any info...

On a slightly off-topic, I've also decided--to commemorate the licensing--to get them both a new ID tag for their collars. Ones I found at catconnection.com. They look like little state drivers licenses made out to your pet.
I thought they were TOO CUTE.

Apparently only dogs need to be registered in Cleveland, Ohio.
