Gargling salt water helps-for a recipe, just search on Google. I also like the Cloraseptic (sp?) throat lozenges. They help to numb the pain.

But the best bet is to go to the doctor, to make sure it's not some kind of infection.

Agreed. In these parts, strep is going around. Unresolved strep throat can damage the kidneys.

And other organs - a friend's wife died a few years ago from strep throat - it ate away her organs.

Dear Ashley, this tastes terrible but it WILL work, put 3 tablespoons of vinegar, white or cidar in a cup of warm water and gargle it, taking a small sip at the end to coat the throat deeper than you can reach by gargleing. Do this about every three hours during the day if you can manage it and again before bed. Good luck and hope that you feel better soon.

gargle with peroxide? Good grief!! That does sound a bit harsh... why not settle for the cheap version - and gargle with salt water? It's just as good as any antibiotic because the strep virus that causes the sore throat can't survive in salt water
I suffer with a sore throat on a regular basis.... so I'd suggest the salt water trick, burnt toast (I know, it hurts a bit, but it works to clean your throat and the charcoal mops up free radicals and stuff) closely followed by something like tea and honey, or even better, ice-cream. Drink lots of cool water and very often you coudl find a simple honey and lemon linctus at your chemists - it doesn't cost much at all and it just helps to soothe the pain a bit - sometimes they have a paracetamol in them, but the upsie to that isthat you can take that alongside things like ibuprofen based painkillers

Get well soon!

The only thing that works for me is drinking hot stuff. Tea with lemon, coffee (with whiskey in it works fine). Hot cocoa is a no-no during a cold unless it's made with water.

I never tried the vinegar thing... ick!

And yah if Strep is "let go" it can wreak havoc, cause Rheumatic Fever and damage your heart valves. If ya see little white pus-sacs on your tonsils or throat, ya have Strep. Tonsilitis is just sore tonsils I think? But still warrants a trip to the doctor's office for them to stick that thing down your throat and SWAB your already-sore tonsils. Fun.

I would recommend gargling with soluble paracetamol/Panadol, then swallowing it. The particles stick to the sides of your throat and you get added pain relief. (I had to do this for over a year when I had Glandular Fever and it offered me mild relief for the debilitating pain)

Hope you're feeling better soon!

I usually do a triple assault:

1. Advil cold and sinus gels
2. robitussin cough syrup
3. sore throat lozenges - any brand works, i like the sucrets one.

I'm concerned that some of the answers you are getting are misleading and/or dangerous....

ok.....first off, salt water will NOT kill strep. No matter how often you drink it, you won't expose all of the infected area to it anyway. It CAN offer some relief from the pain, but if it is in fact strep, you'll need antibiotics. A simple swab at the doctor's will tell you if it's strep.

Next, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't gargle with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide basically kills ALL organic material, including the cells in your throat. You definitely don't want to ingest it accidentally, either.

Burnt toast will not "mop up" free radicals. You can't "mop" them up (also, just a point of interest.....one of the main sources of free radicals in the body is hydrogen peroxide produced during metabolism). The body has pathways to deal with free radicals. Luckily, free radicals are not what is causing your sore throat, so don't worry about them.

Unfortunately, having your tonsils out doesn't mean you won't get strep. When tonsils are removed, it's usually only the Palatine tonsils that are taken out. Your other tonsils are still there, so you can still develop strep throat, though I think it's less likely. Strep is a bacteria that is found all around us and can lead to serious complications (Scarlett fever for one) if untreated. If you suspect strep or the sore throat doesn't resolve in the next week, see a doctor!

Hope you're feeling better soon!

There are a few medicine that may help. The only one that comes to mind at this moment is one by Cepastat. But I recall there is another, which I call the "super-suckers" that is really effective and it removes the pain almost immediately although it cost like more than a dollar per pill/piece. It is a huge piece/pill that is at least 3 times the size of your normal strepsils. It does not actually cures it immediately but it removes the pain. Of course it numbs your whole throat such that anything you eat or drink tastes bland. I think you coudl ask the doctor or pharmacist.

HI! well I did go to the ER and well it wasnt strep throat but an inflamation of my throat. My allergies went crazy when a week of stronge wind brought dust into town, so my nose and ears had gunk draining into my throat which iritated it baddly. I was given med's for the infection. It took 2 days for it to stop hurting and now im better. i can eat at last. YAY!!!!!!

To Bumpy

The spray and stuff that numbs your throat never helped, the pain was to deep fo it to reach.
