You know what is really fun? I'm sure some of you have heard this before. Pay for the next car at the toll plaza.

I hold doors open for people (men and women). I guess because in today's day & age, it's rarely done for anyone anymore, and it's a kind AND EASY gesture. Especially older people; I'll jaunt up ahead of them and hold the door open, like at the mall or drug store, etc.

I know it's probably not wise to talk to strangers, especially in the city I work in, but during my daily 2 mile walk, I say HI to everyone & ask 'how are you'. Sometimes I get a weird look or nothing in return but I let the person know "I see you". It's not only a safety thing, but, a friendly thing. More often than not, I get a "HI" back and a "FINE HOW ARE YOU?".

At PetSmart - where I go to get my furkids food, litter, and toy mice - I always stick spare change into the little bucket they keep there.

I tell my daughter (only child) every morning how smart she is and how beautiful she is. My child will NEVER have low self esteem or EVER wonder if mommy loves her. Period!!!

The place I get my gas at now, which is always cheaper than anyplace else around where I live --- United Dairy Farmers --- always has these icing cookies for 99 cents on the counter. So instead of paying at the pump, I get gas & walk in and get myself & my daughter a cookie. As a "treat" to myself for paying high gas prices, I GET A COOKIE and so does my kid. =-) Makes getting gas not so depressing.

Smile when you're calling someone or answering the phone. You can hear it!

No matter how frustrated you are when you call/go in to complain about something a company has or hasn't done, be nice to the person you're talking to. They didn't do it.
And they will appreciate being treated like a human being. (And as a bonus...most of the time if you're nice to them, they will do everything they can to make sure your problem is resolved...but that's not the best reason to do it!)

I've been volunteering with the Children's Aid Society for a few years, and I'm a tutor/big sister to two kids (brothers) who are living in poverty, come from abuse and who both have learning disabilities.

I'm taking them out bowling this weekend, and besides tutoring, we often do "fun" stuff, like going out to a museum, a movie, and I take them out for some grub afterwards. These kids are amazing considering what they've been through and I love the time I spend with them... they certainly keep me young!

I've been volunteering with organizations helping at-risk youth for over 10 years and was also involved on a voluntary basis as a board member of an organization that provides interest-free loans to women fleeing abuse.

Thanks for creating this thread, Cheryl.
I've enjoyed reading all the responses and it's given me inspiration to do a few things that were mentioned.

The next time I bake cookies, I'm going to bring a batch to my elderly neighbour (a cat lady!) who lives upstairs.

Here's a good deed...
Every time I see at cat I have to stop and give it pets... and for the most part, they usually approach me.

With the exception of my last boyfriend, this drove a lot of my exes nuts... one of the major reasons they're an EX.

Um, can it be animals too?

I'm getting a feeder mouse, and nursing it back to health, then giving it a new home with one of my friends, all because feel bad for it.

I turn off the TV and play a game with my little brother.

I let my roommates have some of my food when they ask, even though I have no money to buy more.
I don't know if all parents would think this was GOOD, but I'll say something to kids I see that are doing something dangerous (like once, in the supermarket, on kid was pushing her little brother around in one of the mini carts for kids...he was STANDING UP and she was RUNNING....I was like "you sit down or get out of the cart. we don't want you to fall out and get a knock on the head". They looked at me like I was a crazy stranger, which I guess I was, but they stopped and that's good enough for me).
I give my study notes to people in my class, even though they take me days of pretty constant work to put together.
If I'm in a line or waiting room, and there's a parent with a kid who is getting antsy and starting to annoy the parent or misbehave, I'll strike up a conversation about SpongeBob or Dora the Explorer to distract him/her while the mom fills out paper work or whatever.

Fwan,

It only takes one person to get something like this started. Why not take the initiative and you pay for someone else's toll or someone else's coffee - anonymously. You never know - they may be so impressed that someone has done something nice for them that they in turn will do something nice for someone else. You may never know that they have, but you'd be surprised how good doing something like that makes you feel inside that it doesn't matter if no one other than you knows about it. And perhaps, one day, you will be the recipient of this good will when someone else responds in kind. It can be contagious:-).

Have a great day!

Katheryn, I have to agree. It is contagious.

A few years back, a friend called me to tell me about something amazing that happened to them. They, with their two toddler-aged sons in tow, were getting gas. When her hubby went to pay for it, he was told it had already been taken care of.
The guy who had payed for his gas right before he went in had paid for their whole tank of gas! So they did the same in turn, when they had the opportunity.

Oh, that reminds me of something I'd totally forgotten. Once years ago, my husband and I went up to the cashier to pay for our dinner at a restaurant, and a total stranger had done so for us. We were so utterly amazed! Maybe we were dressed like bums and he thought we really needed it. But what an uplifting experience!

Since I live alone (with my three cats) and often don't even go out of the house for a week or more at a time, I don't do things for others often. But last week when someone from our quilt guild called and asked about a computer quilting design program, I went over to her house and spent several hours showing her how to use it. It was fun and I got to know someone with whom I only had a passing acquaintance.

The most common thing I do for others though, is to make quilt tops which I take to a local church where other ladies finish them up and send them for world relief. I have about 40 tops ready to go as soon as I get them photographed. Some are simple, some are more detailed. But regardless how plain or fancy, some victim of earthquake, famine, war, or just plain poverty will likely be grateful.

Under the cats, mostly.
I think there are fewer responses here because it's just in our nature to be nice.... it's difficult to tell people about the things you do for someone else if it's something that you've done all your life, because you probably don't think of it as being anything out of the ordinary, or particularly special in any way... things that annoy us... well we can always think of something to go there! It's funny because you see the same trends in interviews.... certainly in the Scots, English born people dont' seem to have as much of a problem selling themselves in an interview... when asked to point out all of their good qualities, Scots will flouder and say "I don't really know...." (I think that's down to poor interview training more than anything else though) so there you go... you mustn't be disappointed in us... it's just that we're all too nice on a regular basis for us to notice!! And very modest too

Hehhee, as my Dad always loves to say, "If it wasn't for my modesty, I'd be perfect!"
