A couple of months ago, a cat wandered in off the street and found my home and never left. She is a little calico cat and I named her Tinkerbelle. (I have another calico named Annabelle, she's so rotten) Anyways, just a couple of days ago, Tinkerbelle had a litter of four adorable kittens but I was surprised that they were all white. My question is, will they stay white? A couple of people have told me that they will get the calico coloring later on in life...is this true? Any comments would be much appreciated!

Angel, I am just learning about cat genetics myself, but as far as I can tell the father of these kits was an all-white cat as White is the dominant gene and "masks" all other colors. As far as any color showing up later.... I'm afraid I dont know about that one...

Marian, expecting my own litter here anyday now to my sweet adopted long-haired red girl, Willow.

Their color will stay white. If they were calico then they would've been born calico.

im glad you asked that question. my mum has a grey fluffy cat who last year had one single white fluffy kitten. no other white cats in area, and she only has lumbering and huge tabby boys. we still havent found out how. she called her pearl, the mommy cat is called chrystal! be great to find out how the whole genetic thing works.
big hugs to the kittens

That's not exactly true...

Yes if they were going to be calico they probably wouldv'e been born like that, but at 2 days old they could develop points, that could take several days to show.

As Ken said they could develop points. When our White Persian Female(masking black) gave birth this year she had four kittens one was a blue bicolor two kittens with genetic spots and a pure white - the pure white was the only one to survive!

How are the kittens doing?

The kittens are doing wonderfully. They're a little over three weeks now, and they are the most adorable little things i've ever seen. They stayed white, so they look like little balls of cotton, very fluffy little things. I haven't been able to name them yet...I cant tell them apart!
But, they are very active...I need to get them a bigger box...they've turned out to be very good escape artists.
