I'm planning my trip to Ohio this summer, and had a grand idea.
I've always just checked the airfare between Detroit and Toledo...and Detroit always came out better hands down. But remembering how long Christy said it took her to come from Cleveland, I decided to check that one. Hey! It's almost exactly the same distance and time to Camp Perry from either Detroit or Cleveland!

So I was wondering...anyone have experience with the Cleveland airport? Is it easy to navigate? Easy to get in and out of in a car for someone who doesn't know the area at all? Better than Detroit? Worse than Detroit?

I've come in and out of Detroit enough times to pretty much know my way around both the airport and getting to Camp Perry from there, but right now Cleveland has a flight that works better with my schedule AND is about $50 cheaper...

Camp Perry is right by Port Clinton, just west of Sandusky. It's about 1 1/2 hours from Cleveland (and Detroit! LOL). If you want to look it up on mapquest, they actually have it spelled wrong. They list it as Camp Peary.

Well, my Dad will be there, but it's not because of that.
It's for the National Rifle Championships that are held at Camp Perry the first week of August every year.
There are actually National shooting Championships from June through the middle of August, and the Rifle Championships are the 1st and 2nd week of August. The second week is all individuals, and since I'm not shooting (YET, one specialty match doesn't count
), and I am the Team Coordinator, I really only need to be there the first week.

OHHHHHH, now I kind of remember you saying something to Christy about this in the past. Does she go with you? (maybe we should start a PM with this unless everyone else is interested!!)

Basically find a club that participates in High Power/Service Rifle competition. I know that the club that I'm mainly affiliated with holds Clinics about once a month during the summer to give people a chance to see what this is all about. Rifle, ammunition, gear and coaches are all provided.

If you want to see what I do, the best site is www.odcmp.com which is for the Civilian Marksmanship Program. That is the national body that oversees various competitions. If you go to the About Us page, you can find State Associations and affiliated Gun Clubs in your state/area.

There is also the Akron airport close by - never been there though - so don't know the specifics.

Sorry to check in on this thread so late (weather and all
). The airport is near two major highways, one that goes north-south and the other east-west, so you should be able to get to Port Clinton rather easily. All of the car rental places are now outside the airport, so you won't have to worry about airport congestion, and I'm sure they'll be more than ready to give good directions.

Thanks Tracey! I checked and the airfare was about $60 more to fly into Akron.

Thanks too Christy!

Hopefully I'll be able to purchase the tickets very soon, and that flight will still be available.
