Does anyone know if cats prefer hunting/chasing crawlies or flyers? I know they are smart and would rather catch the easier prey. But if I wanted to move cats to a farm, would they be chasing the chickens or the mice?
Chickens are big birds - some of them can be bigger than some small cats. I suspect that cats on a farm would probably be cautious about chickens at first, and chickens are able to defend themselves - once those wings get extended they can look really big, they can move quickly, they make a lot of noise. and the beaks can inflict injury. My Mom used to tell a story about a rooster on the farm where she grew up that used to chase the children until he chased them one too many times and ended up in the stewpot. I suspect a cat would probably decide to leave them alone unless well motivated by hunger.
It would depend on the cat. Limerick finds flying things more intersting, but he can get at the crawling things eaiser, but he loses interest after a while. You cat will most likely go after both.
Thank you. I asked because I was thinking of perhaps moving rescued strays to the family farm. There are chickens and a rooster and lately there's been rat problems. I was wondering if it would be a good idea.
