I have had my cat since she has been a baby. I got her in August. Tonight I got a new kitten and my cat hates her. She has been hissing and growling at her since we brought her home. She is also hissing and growling at me and my 11 year old daughter whenever we come near her. How long will this last? Is there anything I can do to make this meeting go a bit more smoothly? What should I do when she hisses at the people? to get a little better idea about my old cat, see the thread about the obsessed cat...that is mine.

1. Are they both fixed?

2. Did you just bring the new one home and plop them down together just like that to see what happens?

If yes, don't do that. You need to seperate them at first, then after a day or so, take whatever they are sleeping on (a blanket, clothing, cat bed, etc...) and switch it between the 2 cats (still in their seperate rooms) so that they get used to each others scents. When you finally do introduce them, put some vanilla extract on both of their necks and base of their tails. This way they will smell the same and hopefully be a little more accepting of each other.

Expect a little hissing or growling at first. They aren't going to just lay down and sleep curled up together right off the bat. As long as they aren't harming each other or drawing blood. Some cats play rough and it may almost look like they are fighting. If they wanted to hurt each other, they probably would have by now. Good luck.
