Recently, my kitten developed two new meows. One is a trill at the back of his throat. He often makes it with his mouth closed. The second is kind of a cackle, like "ah-ah-ah-ah-ah," and his little mouth moves really fast when he does it.

I've been pretty good so far at interpreting his other meows--cries for attention, of pain, etc--but have no idea what these could be.

I should also note that they are not bird calls, as he does them in the apartment, away from the windows. ...Any ideas?

Is he bored? Lonely?

My two 'talkers' do this when they are bored or alone. If the other cats are off in another part of the house or sleeping, Snickers & Hammie will at different times talk to themselves. Snickers sings at night, a real high pitched trill!

Just to be certain, does he have anything stuck in this throat? Does it sound like something is in there? Or is it just him making noises?

He's probably just chatting with himself!

Sierra has a little trill/hum similar to what you describe when I touch her when she resting. I was going to suggest your kitty was chattering, but you say it's not the same as when he's watching a bird. Each kitty has different sounds and meows. I'm sure he'll clue you into what's on his mind!

that first one sounds like a sound Pixel makes - sorta half purr, half meow - i call it murrow. the second sounds like chattering - is he looking at birds or other prey animals when he makes it? i know you said away from windows, but what about TV, pictures, video...

Two of mine do that trill sound. Usually it is when they are looking around for someone to play with them, or trying to find something with which to play.

The 'chittering sound' is a hunting sound so it may be that he has found something inside that he wants to get but can't quite reach - mine will do this if they see a bug or fly on the wall or ceiling out of reach.

Bella seems to imitate me I swear.. her greetings and responses are a quick "mewrr" which is similiar to my quick 'hey!' greeting or my quick 'hey!' when I want to get her attention. She does it right back to me.
When she wants my attention, its a meow/chirp which means 'pet me' or 'watch me flop' or 'I am right here!' when I call her by saying 'where is the cute kitty??! I cant find her!!" hahaha..

I know exactly what chattering sound you mean! OMG, I had a cat once who did that sometimes, usually when i was folding laundary. It is a kind of quick ga ga ga ga sort of high pitch cackle, right? almost sounds human, but not quite? It really freaked me out the first couple times I heard it, because I thought there was someone in the house! lol I think he did it just to get my attention, because he stopped when he did get it. It does sound funny, doesn't it?

Hammie asks questions. Does anyone else have cats who talk, and it sounds like they are asking questions? They make their throaty noises & it almost has a "?" questioning kind of sound?

Like, "Meow???"

Once Hammie said, "Herro?". He has a growly kind of talk sometimes and he was on a roll one morning, then my daughter and I clearly heard him enunciate HELLO?

Funny stuff.

Yep! that's exactly it!! Kumal's just a teeny kitten. So, the cackle was high pitched, but still in his baby voice. I couldn't have mistaken it for a person, but would have if he was older & his voice was deeper. I think your interpretation is correct, that it was to get attention, because he did it when I was groggy and slow to wake up. I'm surprised, though; he usually just makes a loud, whiney meow to get attention. Silly little goose!

My Sam does this when he wants some attention. He will make this chatter noise looking right into my eyes and I will talk to him and he will answer with this noise back and forth until he gets tired of talking. Not sure what we are talking about but he seems to love it!
