I just noticed a patch of hair missing and some raw skin on the back of Max's neck. Since we don't use flea medicine, I assume one of the "play" fights must have gotten a little too serious and the other cat took a chunk of fur out.

It's not a "bite" but the skin is red from where the fur was yanked out. Is there anything I can put on this to help it heal faster? Max can't reach it because it's on the back of his neck.

Is there anything like Neosporin for cats?

Thanks!

Rescue Remedy, a homeopathic Bach Flower treatment, also comes in an ointment that is useful for things like cuts, scrapes and scratches. You could clean it, if it ineeds it, with a betadine scrub - that is a safe antiseptic to use on cats diluted with water or if you have a health food store nearby, you could get some pau d'arco root and make a tea by putting 1 tsp in boiling water, letting it sit until cool, then washing the scrape in the tea. I am not sure about using commercial antibiotic ointments on cats - I am sure one of the vet techs will be able to give you advice on that.

Now isnt this a coincidence. I was just on the site yesterday with the same issue. Same thing...toms fighting and the one has fur gone from both on the side and bottom of his neck. The skin is very red and raw.

I just happened to talk to the vet down the road today and was told yes. Cleaning the wound and applying neosporin will certainly help. Gosh, I finally have an answer instead of a question for once.

The Bach Flower is in a health food store? Is that expensive? I thinking of how Im going to allow the tom to let me actually wash that area with tea. I know my husband would really flip out if he saw me boiling tea for the cat...

Yeah that might be fun. If you dont think he will let you wash it.... try a mister type bottle. these can be bought at walmart for 50 cents.

The same thing happened to Persil during play fighting. Unfortunately, since the cats groom each other as well as fight, the scab kept getting licked/groomed off and the wound reopening. I kept it clean with antiseptic and ended up making her a cardboard collar about 2 inches wide that I tied on to her original collar, so that no other cat could get at the place. It is now almost healed.
