Pope Given Last Rights:

Been following this all day:

Pope John Paul II was given the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church late Thursday night as his health condition deteriorated, a Vatican source told CNN.

and

It was reported earlier that he had a high fever, a urinary infection and a huge drop in blood pressure... more coming...

Yes I read it. How long has he been Pope? My gosh I can hardly remember when he wasn't.

I think he's been Pope for just under 30 years, 26 maybe?. It's a very sad situation. He will definately be a tough act to follow.

The Vatican has had the police block the area all around the Vatican. Sounds serious... They did note that the Emergency room has not been put on standby, so that could be two reasons, imo... 1. He's getting better or 2. He's expected to pass on anytime. Just an update from what I am hearing.

That scares me that he's been give his last rights. He's been a great Pope. Whatever happens is in God's hands.

He has been pope for 26 years... and he has also been given his last rites before, back in 1981.

Now at work we were talking about some prophesy that said he would die while pope? I guess he said it tho.

MOST popes have died in office. It has been very rare for one to resign.

I just cant help but feel that if this Pope passes away then it is the start of the Apocalypse.... Because all of the bibical stuff would come true

He won't be the first Pope to die in office. With few exceptions, they have almost ALL died in office (not always of natural causes) and the world has not come to an end.

It boils down to the fact that this is an 86-year-old man, with a debilitating disease (Parkinson's) and multiple other health problems. He's had a good, long run and reached the pinnacle of success (for a Catholic priest, Pope is as good as it gets) and he's just plain worn out. Pope or not, the man is human.

Yep, Pope is a job for life. They did depose a few back inthe middle ages though. And assassinate some then too. But it was even more political back then. Mind you, there have been rumours about the previous Pope who died in the 1980s, after only having ruled for 6 weeks.

can I point out to those non catholics worrying about it.. the last rights are not the final word on death, kids.. he could make a full recovery, and he could get last rights again later.

On that note, I'm thinking this may be his last hurrah.. It's been a good papacy, in my opinion, but he's had it rough... and 86 years old with such a high fever.... well let's face it.... does not look good.

Update:

His breathing has become shallow and an Italia Sky News has reported that the Pope has lost consciousness. Sounds like it is near... This is as of 10:10am MST.

doesn't look like he will make it thru the weekend
post #14 of 49
I'll merge this with the thread already in place in IMO.

I spoke to a spanish friend about 2 years about the pope.
ANd she said that many spanish people think that once this pope dies then the world will just fall appart and everyone will die...

I don't think the world is going to come to an end. I vaguely remember Pope John's funeral, and remember Pope Paul and Pope John Paul I, whose death I still wonder about.
The latest report is that his kidneys have failed, and he's unconscious.
I'm curious to see where the next Pope comes from - I'd like to see a South American, African or Filipino be chosen, not somebody like Ratzinger.

The Vatican is always slow on this anyways.

The golden shutters? What's that?

(Sorry, I've never been alive when a pope has passed away)

They are the shutters on his window of his apartment in Vatican City. When those are closed, it is symoblism that the Pope has passed on.

Oh thanks, that makes sense. Now can I ask another silly question? Do the Popes always live in the same apartment? Does that even make sense?

And I heard that it'll take about another month to find another Pope... is that true too?

From what I understand on both questions, yes... I could be wrong about the apartment though, but I think that is correct. I heard earlier that 116 cardinals will be heading to Rome and one of them will be chosen to be the new pope, atleast thats what I understand of it.

Yeah we're debating that here at work. I just don't understand why we can't get confirmation - he's either alive or not.

I am watching CNN breaking news. There are so many people there!
I just sent an urgent fax to my parents telling them that the pope is dying well i stated that he was already DEAD.
I cant hear the tv because bf has the music too loud but it looks like they are about to confirm that he is dead.

Several interesting links to background and related stories, too.

I have no idea if Popes always live in the same apartment. I doubt that it will take a month to find another Pope. It's more a matter of hours or days, as I remember it, once the "conclave" has started (about 15 days after the Pope's death). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conclave

A lot of Spanish people believe that, I grew up thinking that the world was going to end when the Pope died. The only reason I believe that was because that's what my mom and my grandma told me.

I have always been touched by when he went to see the man who shot him, the look on the mans face is so touching, he is so much lighter than when he was arrested, his face actually has joy in it being in the Pope's presence.

I understand he took the name of John Paul in honor of the previous pope who died so quickly a few years earlier.
