I just got a phone call this afternoon asking me if I want to work in the corrosion department again for natural gas pipelines. My resume was on file with someone, which is why I got the call. I would start some time in May. There's still the possibility that I may not get the job, but it will drive me nuts over the next two weeks because I would like it... and I wouldn't like it. *Sigh........ I still have a ton of work left to do on my game, but if I took some time off the project to work, I could use the extra money for my project. I have a lot to think about. No matter what, my game needs to be finished, but I'm not sure if I can afford to put it on hold. I risk losing my programmer to a large game company. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOTE: If I do decide to work on the pipeline again there's still no way I'll give up TCS, so don't get all excited about me leaving.
I'll buy a laptop and hook up in a hotel late at night if I have to.

Well I've already started a mental list. Two things at the top are having lots of levels done for my game and less money as opposed to having nothing more done and having more money to launch the game. I am going to make an actual list though. That's a great suggestion.

I'm sorry, Ryan. I read that too quickly. You said you may risk losing your programmer. I thought he'd already left you.

this is the internet era, my friend. keep your programmer working where-ever he is, and you connect with him (and work on your game in the evenings) via laptop.

it'll slow you down a bit, but it'll keep both ideas going.

That might be possible. Good suggestion.

Income is never a bad thing. Also, sounds like you would get to travel in this position. How much and how far? Sounds kind of exciting to me.

heck, Linksys makes VPN-enabled routers that would make this real easy. The files are all stored on a machine on your "office" network, with one of these routers (linksys is just the cheapest. Cisco makes better ones if you have the $ and chops to run it). you have another router, configured to connect to the "office".

You hook up the router to your hotel's high-speed feed, hook up your laptop to the router, and you're on your "office' network sharing files.

the connection might be a bit slower then you're used to, but it should be fast enough to copy files, edit them, and the like...

It will be no farther than 8 hours away, but I may be working 6 days a week, so some weekends I wouldn't even bother coming home. I'd be with a crew of 10 people too, which wasn't always like my old career. I was usually on my own. I liked that, but working in a crew is fun. It also cuts the living expenses down.

Well, talk about out of the blue, Ryan! This would completely change your present way of life as well as altering your previous plans. This could all be for the better, though, and it sounds as if you could continue working on your game while on the road. Quite a decision you're facing. I know you will make the right one! I'm really excited for you!

Would you be out in the middle of nowhere? Would they even have internet at the hotels?

The major gas pipelines usually run close to our number one highway, so we won't always be in the middle of nowhere. I never had a laptop when I worked on the road before, but we might be likely to be in hotels that would have internet access. I'm not sure yet.

Aw Ryan, I know how rough this decision must be. It's never fun to make a life changing decision. I hope you make the decision that's best for you. Oh, and we're glad you don't plan to give up TCS
