This morning, i had a follow-up visit with a specialist (eye doctor) for Marsh.

The visit started out unusually, because it was in the AM, and i've never taken him this early to the vet, always at night (teh doctor is a 9-5 type, and this early visit was the only one they had).

So he saw the carrier and bolted
, and i only happened to grab him by the back leg before he was *gone*. I stuffed him in the carrier, and he cried all the way there (very unusual for him)

as we came in, i saw they had a lot of big dogs inside. marsh's not used to big dogs, he's my only cat and we do not have other 4-legged animals in the house. So, i usually open the carrier to have him look out the top door, but as i soon as i opened it a little, he started to bolt again (extremely unusual), so i had to leave him inside.

Then, to make matters worse, i found out i came in one day early (my app was tomorrow!
) so i got agitated and marsh definitely picked up on it

they said they're overbooked for my timeslot (3 other apps), and asked to wait. I thought it would take a good hour, but they took me right away (possibly seeing my distress?)

the visit was good, marsh's eye is 90% healed. But marsh was not happy and hissed at the vet twice!
again, unusual.

so i put him in the carrier, and we go back out to the cashier. I put him down and see a huge rottie and blood all around him (he bit his tongue), and of course, the stupid!!! owner just let's him approach marsh's carrier and start dripping blood all over it!!!!
MY GOD! .. so i start yelling at the owner, who promptly pulled the monster away.. but now i had to wipe teh carrier with anti-viral wipes.. and it smelled terribly and marsh was getting visibly upset, meowing and clawing at the lid, trying to get out (he never, ever tried that before
)

so we get out, i'm a nerveous wreck
we get into teh car, and again, i open the hinge, thinking he'll calm down and be OK for the ride home, but again, he's got this second personality thing, almost bolting into the back of the car (it's a 2-door, i've had a big problem trying to get him out of the car when we got home.) so i closed the lid and drove him to him yelping in the carrier

BUT, as soon as we got home and i let him out, he snapped back to being *Marsh* again
head-butting me and purring up a storm - i'm telling you, this little prankster will be 'the end of me', as another poster said

*vent over*

Poor little guy!! But he's okay now..?

Sounds like someone is tired of the doctor!
That sucks that you and Marsh had such a bad time.

Aww, poor Marshy
And poor Marina!

Sounds like you had QUITE a rough trip to the vet! I'm so glad his eye is healing
But the nerve of that idiotic pet owner. I feel bad for his rotty (though I am not a rottweiler fan!) but letting it bleed all over your cat? Sheesh!
Hope that Marsh is 100% happy and back to normal soon!!!

you're sooo right! he's done with the vet, and if i have to take him in again soon, it will end in bloodshed

His eye is sooo much better, vet said continue the medication and he'll be ok. It's a herpes infection, and i've made things worse
by going to a regular vet first who prescribed a steroid-based drop, which is NOT what you do during herpes outbreak, oh well, live and learn ( and pay
)...

Wow, what an ordeal!
I'm glad things are getting better and that Marsh went back to himself when you got home. What a trying day at the vet! I think no human or pet enjoys those days!!

My cat has the herpes virus, too. My vet said something about putting him on expensive anti-viral meds. Since there is no cure, I guess I would have to give him meds at every outbreak.

But then I read somewhere on the web (I think it was on here on TCS) that 500 mg/day of l-lysine clears up the eyes for most cats. L-lysine is an amino acid that interferes with viral replication and it can be purchased at health food stores. I asked my vet about it and she said, "I'm so glad you brought that up!! Yes, you should try it." My cat hasn't had any eye problems since. I buy 500 mg capsules and mix 1/2 in the juice from canned chicken twice daily.

I'm sending positive vibes your way and I'm sorry the trip to the vet was such a nightmare.

Hi, so glad to see another cat with herpes (no pun intended), in my view, most vets have no idea how to treat this.

Yes, it's permanent. Yes, i too use L-Lysine, in powder form and mix in with his dry food, which he eats without problems.

To contain and fix this current problem, i have him on drops and l-lysine gel, about 500mg/day.

It's working, but slowly. this is his second outbreak in about a year and a half. Thankfully, all my records from this specialist are forwarded to my regular doctor, who can treat Marsh from now on.
