Man, I have been working my tail off these past few weeks
, but it is paying off.
I am proud to share with my TCS family that, starting in mid-April, my office at Hunter Army Airfield will be home to Patriotic Paws.
What is Patriotic Paws? Glad you asked!

As y'all know, my life's work is helping victims of domestic violence. I've seen from my own cases (as well as nation-wide data) that a lot of victims will not leave their abusive homes for the safety of a domestic violence shelter because the vast majority of these shelters do not allow animals. Think about it- how many of us would leave our furbabies behind with an abusive person to go to a shelter? Not many of us.
So Patriotic Paws provides foster homes in confidential locations, which care for the victims' pets while they look for new, pet-friendly homes away from their abusers (or until they can get the abuser out of their home). The program is free to military members
or their spouses/dependents (my contract limits me to working in the military setting only, but I am working on taking this program city-wide, as well as down to Ft. Stewart), as long as they have been a victim of domestic violence.
We're partnering with a local pet rescue group (SHAMELESS PLUG FOR COASTAL PET RESCUE
) and we have just about everything in place- foster families, vet services, official paperwork, etc. There are just a few minor details to work out and then we're in business!!!
If you can, please send some good vibes in hopes that this vital service will be a success!

Thanks guys!
I really appreciate it!
I meant to include in the original message: if any TCS-ers are at all interested in starting a similar program, feel free to PM me and I can give you tons of advice and references

Given what you said, Patriotic Paws sounds like a very thoughtful and much needed service. Big thumbs up to that!

That sounds fabulous!!! Not only will you be helping enable more people to get out of abusive situations, you will probably save more animal lives than you will ever know!

It is a wonderful thing you are doing!! I wish more people had thought of this and would open up more for everyone. Not just us military folks. Good for you for working to get this available to more people.

Loving my beautiful baby girl
This is spectacular, Amy!
You're so right that many women will stay with their abuser out of fear of leaving their fur babies in harm's way. This is going to be a wonderful service! Bless each of you providing this!
Please do keep us updated how it's going!

Thanks y'all!

Well, fortunately, I contract for a company that has advocates at military bases (marine, airforce, navy, and army) throughout the country. Some of my fellow advocates have expressed an interest in starting similar programs at their bases, so we'll see! Right now I'm really focused on getting our local DV shelter (where I used to work) on board so that they may take the program city-wide!
I'll post our press releases once we get them out!!

Thanks Barbara
We have not had occasion to use the program yet (not sure if that's a good or bad thing
) but at least it's there if someone DOES need it!

Amy one of the things I admire about you besides the obvious passion you have for your work is your follow though with your programs. Congratulations on a job well done. This program could very well save the life and sanity of someone that needs a helping hand. I am very proud of you.
