Do you think it is wrong to change a cats name?

My neighbor gave me her cat (she's had it for a few months) and the cats name is scratch. Scratch is a very sweet, vocal little girl and I just don't think the name suits her! What do you think? Is it ok to change it? Here's a picture of the little girl:

If you think it's ok to change the name, what would you name her?

looks like Stretch would be a more appropriate name
anyway I went thru the same thing when i got my 2 adopted cats, in the end I kept their names as I usually call them little nicknames anyway, you know booboo or lil pooper or sweetypoo, etc etc blah blah

I think its alright. How old is she, though? She might be too used to her already name.

I'd name her Beauty.

What a doll! I love her coat!

I think it's ok to call her whatever you want. So long as you're taking care of her, which you are, she'll have what she really needs. I think she needs an old name. From Shakespeare. I say.....Bianca. That'd be my pick. But you should name her something that you think just suits her.

OMG!!! I just changed my own kitten's name from ScratchY to Sashka - because she is a sweet angel and that name didn't suit her. Sashka means `spring' or `jump' in Russian, and she is a Russian Blue who's main skills are jumping and climbing - so I thought it very appropriate. Also, it sounds similar to Scratchy so she doesn't get confused. Besides, she never pays any attention when you call her no matter what you say - her name could be Derek for all she cares!!

So I would say, yes, change the name to something you like more, and kitty will get used to it. They're not like dogs, and I really don't think they care what they're called as long as you feed, love and pamper them!!

I'd say it's fine! My friend just got an adult cat from the Humane society and changed his name to Icabod. He picked up on it within a couple of weeks. (he was about 3 when she got him).
Also, I changed my kittens name. Some sillyhead at the shelter named him "brew". Now he's chester, although he responds to "stinky" (his nickname) much more readily

I always get sad thinking people will change my foster kitties names. I couldn't change my kitties names when I adopted them.

But I'm a little bit of a ninny about things like that.
I don't think the cats care at all.

I like Bianca too.

She looks very sweet, and pretty too!

I think changing her name is fine -- you are going to love her and that's what matters, and I'm sure she'll love whatever name you give her.

How about Madonna? (all the hair colors hehehehe)

Or because she's so sweet: (Sweety is the obvious one) Honey, Syrup, Luscious, or Gooey

Girls names that mean sweet: Dulcea, Dulcinea, Cara, Jarah, Kalila, Melossa, Miette (I like this one - kinda sounds like "Meow"), Rianna or Vevina

Enjoy your new furry family member no matter what you name her...

It is really up to you. Personally, I would not change it. Right now, I'm trying to teach my new cat Wawa, his name. Well, he knows his name but he won't come when I call him. He responds only when he wants to. So that is why I'm not sure if he really knows it. Sheesh, I'm not making sense.

I've never been challenged with changing a cats name but 3 of my 4 dogs got name changes and it was a piece of cake. They catch on eventually.

OMG I love these names ya'll have come up with!!!!! they are such graet names!!! I'm not too creative when it comes to names. I have one cat named Fuzz (long haired orange tabby) and one named Gracie (black/tan/white calico) I'm so excited now! Thanks!!

Amy - how is Miette pronounces? Like Mee-ette? I love it! I also love syrup! I would have never thought of that!

And Leli - I love Bianca!

Ilovecats - Beauty! I love it!

Now I'm gonna have to write all of these down and draw from a hat! LOL

I *think* she's about 9 months. I have a vet appointment this weekend so hopefully they can give me a good estimate on her age

Francine's name was Babe-ums when we got her last year...I just couldn't call her that without feeling
So I started calling her Baby Girl because it was close to sounding like Babe-ums. But somehow she wound up being called Francine (after that girl bully in a Simpsons episode because she don't take stuff from none of the other kitties!!
But we alternatly would call her Baby Girl than Francine, then more often Francine. Now she's just Francine and comes running when she hears her name
Though now I'm starting to just call her France for short.

I would say it's totally fine to change its name. When I went and got Waffle from the Humane's Society they had her listed as 'Sara.' I knew that there was no way the sweet little baby girl was a 'Sara' and couldn't have standed to call her that so it was immediately changed. She's been Waffle ever since through and through!

So go for it!

I could yell FRANZ, MADDIE until the cows come home, and neither one of them would twitch in response. Accidently, I did find out what they respond to, the cat meow ringtone that came with my phone. They both come a runnin' when I play it. If they ever escaped and got outside (pretty difficult, there are three separate doors to get to the outside). I would play the ringtone to attact them since they would never come by name.

Yup, Miette is pronounced exactly how you guessed it: Mee-yet

and it actually means "Small Sweet Thing"

Over the Easter break my Dad was taking down our old shed in preparation for the new one going up today. It had been raining (there IS a God!!) and so there was a big tarpaulin over the back lawn. Mum came out the back and saw Sashka lying underneath it - just with her little back legs and tail sticking out. Mum called two or three times, and nothing. She was terrified - thought something had squashed the little darling and she was dead under the tarp. Just as Mum started to rush towards her to investigate in a screaming panic, Sashka twitched her little tail - just a smidge - as if to say, `Gotcha!!!' Little demon. Mum almost died!! It seems to be a game for Scratchy, `See how many times I can scare the life out of my Grannie every day!'

Puppy was named "Amy" when we got her. She doesn't answer to anything but the rattle of her treat jar anyway! Syrup, however, is a very cool name!
