Hopefully the forums won't be down for more than a few minutes - but we will attempt a major update today to patch some security holes.

Thank you all for your patience!

Good to know that. Less chance of anxiety in the event that we find the forums down

Also when it does happen, the forums will be shut down for about 45 minutes.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to this site & might have done a furry freakout if I thought it was gone.

You wouldn't be alone! The last time it went down, I think there was a major panic going on!

Intellectually, I hear and understand every shred of perfectly rational reassurance that is offered. Unfortunately, it's my gut that operates the panic button. (But then, we know the gut and the intellect aren't on speaking terms. )

Thanks for keeping us updated.

Should we expect any threads or posts to get lost in the shuffle during this update?

I'd better check and see if anything good is on TV tomorrow evening, or find a book I absolutely must reread. Thanks for the warning!

This is a vBulletin (the forum) script update. It is like upgrading Microsoft Word but all your old documents still work .
Is it finished?
Just to let you know, my connection to TCS is slower than other links. Is the upgrading affecting it?

That would be me - and I will be starting in the next hour or two - the site will be unavailable for between 30 minutes and an Hour.

Hi Paul,

We are looking forward to the upgrade and I hope it goes well.

P.S. - I like the title "Forum Upgrader" .

There was an issue at the datacenter where the TCS server is, that may or may not have been related. I will look into it.

The upgrade is complete - I shall be around for a day or two just to be sure everything worked ok.

I have turned on the CSS caching feature which means that your browser should download a stylesheet datafile for whatever style you have chosen and then cache it locally - this should make each forum page load slightly quicker as it doesn't need to keep reloading all the style data.

Bless you Paul and thank you-

Wow! That couldn't have been timed better! I've been on a lot more than usual today, and it just slid in between sessions. Lovely.
