middle of the night licking

my 21 year old male cat has beveloped a strange behaivor.
in the middle of the night he will come up to us and start licking
us anywhere he can including the hair. this gets to quite annoying
if we roll over he moves and looks for any exposed skin. if he can't find any skin he will lick our hair. if we are covered up including the hair he will lick the pillows.
can anyone explain this?

He thinks you're his kittens. He loves you. He also doesn't think much of your personal hygiene habits. In his mind, you're not bathing properly, so he must do the job for you. As you don't allow it when you're awake, he must do it when you sleep.

He is quite advanced in age, when was the last time his blood levels were checked?

yes, that was my first response too, maybe he needs salt, since sweat is salty, or something else. I'd have him checked by a vet.
