My husband has been having back pains, and went to the doctor. He just got the xray results back - he has scoliosis and a fractured T7 vertabrae!

I just don't know what to do, think... anything! He is getting a referral to a spine specialist - he is waiting for a call from them.

Ouch, that must be terrible for you guys. Did he injure himself in anyway, or was this just out of nowhere? Out of curiosity, did they happen to mention what type of fracture it was? My brother fractured his T6 and T7 vertebrae last year and he's doing fine (he also has mild scoliosis), so hopefully your husband will be too. Keep us updated, ok? Sending good, healing vibes your way.

No wonder he was having back pains
I hope he will be feeling better soon..now that they know what's what, they can help him with this.

My sympathies for him, Tracey! I managed to fracture 4 vertebrae when I was 16, and it apparently happened when I banged the top of my head on the upper section of the school locker next to mine. I had to wear a brace for several months, and went to a chiropractor twice weekly for about five years. Then I fell from a horse, and sustained fractures of three of the same vertebrae. I've had two bouts of absolute numbness in my left leg, one twenty years after the first accident, and another three years ago, with excruciating back pain. I was told that my three lowest discs have deteriorated (the lowest 3 or 4 vertebrae, respectively, were those fractured), and have been in PT ever since. Once your husband's fractures are healed, it's very important that he build up the surrounding muscles, and do the exercises at least 3 times a week.

Thanks everyone, he is seeing the spine doctor at 4:30 today. I will pass him along the building of the muscels tip. How would be the best to do that?

Once the fractures have healed enough, they'll probably send him to a physiotherapist, who will teach him the exercises that he can do to strengthen the area without reinjuring the area. The doctor today will likely go through the types of movements to avoid and for how long, as well as what types of activity he can start again and when. For my brother, he had to avoid any high impact activity for quite a while, then could start with low impact activities, no lifting, then slowly add in other activies over a designated period of time. The peroid of time will depend on the type of fracture, how it's healing and how well the physio is working (and that he's actually doing it). Hope your appointment goes well today!

When I first started PT, I remarked to the therapist that I felt like I was imitating my cat after he woke up. She told me that was exactly what I should do! Slow stretching seems to be the trick. I've got a couple of books with "back-strengthening exercises" in them, and at least 60% of what is shown is catlike behavior.
