How afraid do you think she really was? I've heard that Chihuahuas can be mean, but come on!

NAPLES, Fla. -- A woman was sentenced to 30 days in jail for killing her neighbor's Chihuahua with a shotgun.

Wanda Ziglar, 49, of Golden Gate, told the dog's owner in court that she was scared of the dog and that it attacked her. She pleaded no contest yesterday to one felony count of animal cruelty.

Ziglar will be allowed to serve her jail time on weekend work detail. The judge also sentenced her to two years probation and six months house arrest.

Ziglar said in court that the Chihuahua repeatedly wandered into her yard. She said she grabbed a shotgun and fired two warning shots into the air to try to scare off the dog.

The dog left after the warning shots, but soon returned. That's when Ziglar said the dog tried to attack her, and she shot it.

The dog's owner, Marisol Olegnichar, says she doesn't believe Ziglar could have been afraid of the two-pound dog.

Oh good lord!

I will give her that one of the meanest dogs I ever knew was a Chihuahua, but still. If it attacks your leg, you can launch the darn thing across the yard with a kicking motion (and not even hurting the dog)! Even as a kid I knew that bout Sir Howard (how stupid of a name is that?!?!) who routinely got out of his yard and was just plain mean.

maybe she was genuinly scared of dogs? fear can be irrational. i'm scared of spider and they are even smaller!

though saying that, i'm not sure if i'd blast one with a shotgun.....

I love animals, including dogs with one exception. I am scared to death of any dog who is below my knee. For some reason, these dogs seem to be excessively mean and aggressive. (I think that they are PO'd b/c they're so little!) The smaller the dog, the more scared I am of it.

I would have been scared to death of that little thing but I don't think that I would have used a shot gun on it. If it came after me, I might have kicked it and if it came again, it might not have survived my 2nd kick.

I hate to say this being an animal lover but even a small dog can be a danger. And quiet frankly, if any animal attacked me viciously regardless of size I would be tempted to have it put down. Admitted I don't own a shot gum, I'd just set a trap and take it to animal control.

I don't understand why anyone allows their animal to be vicious like that. Small dog or no, that's lack of training.

My question is: why was she walking around her yard with a shotgun out in the first place? It doesn't sound like she lived in some remote spot far off in the woods; it's Naples, FL for Pete's sake!!!

Maybe she was chihuahua hunting.

So why didn't she just turn the hose on the dog? Come on - how much damage is a two-pound dog going to be able to do? That's 1/7 the size of my cat!

Ok. It ran off after two warning shots. Now the intelligent person GOES INSIDE! And why did she have the shotgun? Was she just carrying around for show on the off chance that a psycho chihuahua might show up. NO. She went inside (oops, that ends the danger AGAIN) dogs cannot open doors. She comes back out with the shotgun. Didn't call the police or animal control and stay in her SAFE house. She went outside for some 4-legged target practice. No wonder she pled "No contest". A jury would have asked that a second charge of "felony STUPIDITY" be filed. State should have not offered the plea and should have given her lots of time. Any moron that thinks a shotgun in a residential neighborhood is a proper solution is a THREAT to everyones safety and should be kept where they don't have access to injure anyone else.

Arrggh.

Sshhh. The other idiots in Wisconsin will hear you and use this as justification to bolster their "open season on cats" hunting provision. First cats, now chihuahuas, we could end up with skeet shooting with Schipperkees!

Never ever underestimate the power of human stupidity. Just when you think that we have seen the absolute bottom of the gene pool, someone pops up from the algae filled slime and does something like blast a chihuahua with a shotgun.

Argggh.. Again.... (I am not going to get out my soapbox anymore. Just the chlorine for the gene pool.)

another example of one of the many idiotic people we have in this world...
