kitten trying to eat cat food

my three week old kitten was on my bed with his mummy and me whilst she was eating. i was really shocked to see him eat a mouth full of kitten food!

isnt this too early?

will he be damaged?

it was hi-life kitten food which has a really smooth, blended mushy texture.

it was the first time he's seen cat food as Maverick is normally fed away from the kitten.

(this is my last silly question of the night- promise!)

This is completely normal ... kittens will start on regular food anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks generally - he will be fine.

Yes, usually once they start to eat on their own, Mommy will stop doing potty duty. *grin* So a litter pan is a good idea!

Kittens start solid food on their own when they are ready, which is usually around four weeks. Three weeks is early but still very normal. The only food to keep away from him is chunky wet food, especially grilled flavors of Fancy Feast and other foods with a similar texture (like Friskies prime fillets flavors). I know two tiny kittens who nearly choked to death on it. But most other kinds of canned food and all types of dry are safe. Of course, he and his mom should both have high quality kitten food provided for them.

I feed kittens the "mushy", *packed* type of canned food... the kind that Spam looks like. LOL!
