So my kitten Dora who has been with us for about 2 months now does this weird thing. When I go to clean the litter box she will flop down on her side near the box (where there is some litter on the floor). I noticed this when she first moved in and I figured it was because the litter smelled like "hers." She just seems so happy laying on dirty litter floor. I am concerned though because we use the clumping litter and I am afraid that she and my other cat are ingesting it when they groom.

Does anyone have any ideas why she is doing it? should I be concerned? I was thinking about getting a covered box but I am afraid they wont use it. Thoughts?

I am certianly no expert, but you may want to get away from the clumping litter until your kitty quits lying in it.

May be she is young and wants to play. I have the same here, my kitten is 8 months old and when I change litter she likes to go inside of the litter box and play there, it is kind of funny and strange. When she was younger she went to litter box and just slept there. I do not know why.

I think kitties are just curious sometimes.
I have always noticed that cats are drawn to their humans cleaning out the litter.

Mine will hover around me and then get in as soon as I am done...kinda like
"she must like that stuff? I better make some more"

Maybe he is just curious or being propietary about his litter?

Milo and Sturgis will both "play" in the litterbox, and I mean throwing litter out of it to see how loud I can yell at them. I told my husband he needed to talk to his sons about about playing in the bathroom, that it must be a guy thing.

Hehehehehe well you know my guys love to lie in the litter too - and nothing gives them much more pleasure than when I am trying to sweep the floor to lie in the dirt right where I need to sweep - and they grumble and object when I move them!

My boy cat does this. He doesn't sleep in there too much anymore. He used to sleep in there all the time, and roll around in the litter on the floor. He has kind of grown out of it now though.

My cat does slightly the same thing. she will lay and sit in the bit of litter sitting outside of the litter box when the box needs to be cleaned. After i clean it she'll leave it alone. I think shes just trying to tell me something
