Something my niece said made me think of these drink mixes they made when I was little, they were like Kool Aid, I think they were called Funny Face (or something like that). The flavors I remember are Freckle Face Strawberry, Goofy Grape and Rootin' Tootin' Raspberry

Then that made me think of other things like rock candy and turkish taffy.
Hoola hoops, jumping rope and hop scotch and roller skates that were not in-line.

What do you remember when you think back to your childhood???

Fireflies on hot summer nights and crickets; kool aid popsicles; bottle top races with Orange Crush always winning; staying up to watch Laugh-In on tv after dinner; the premier of Sesame Street; and getting in a lot of toruble for going to the dance with a black boy instead of a white one.

Ok let's see...I remember Rollerblade Barbie coming out when I was 8 and getting it for Christmas, then I remember seeing news reports about how her "sparking" rollerblades could cause fires if used in the wrong spot.

I remember the Fisher Price tape player I had that came with a microphone that I used to do "The Katherine Talk Show" on when I was about 5.

I also remember jump ropes, Fisher Price rollerskates, getting rollerblades when they first came out, and the dollhouse my brother made for me when he was 14 and I was 6.
Ohhhhh also...that candy that was flat and like taffy and came in multiple fruit like flavors. It was super super sweet and often tart...and of course the name escapes me right now!!!!!

Roller skates that fastened onto my shoes, my Sting-Ray bike, Captain Kangaroo, Romper Room, Art Fleming as the host of Jeopardy!, The Wonderful World of Disney, five TV channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS and one local independent), Humpty Dumpty Magazine and the Weekly Reader.

You're making me feel old.

Howdy Doody
Penny candy at the corner store, when a penny bought several pieces of some things -- among them, wax bottles with liquid inside, wax lips, black balls
Hopscotch, played in the middle of the street

And, yes, skipping rope, and roller skates that attached to your shoes with a key -- YAK! they were heavy!

Hula hoops, Fisher Price and Barbie were just appearing as I entered my teens.

NYC The Town so Nice, They Named it Twice!
I recall penny candy sold out of a machine on the subway platform, You could buy chicklets (small square pieces of gum) and Jordan Almonds (pretty pastel colored, coated in sugar, almonds) and guess what they came out of the machine UNWRAPPED nobody worried about the possibility of anyone tampering with the candy. BTW, THE SUBWAY FARE WAS 15 CENTS, NOW IT'S 2 DOLLARS!

I remember Joe the Fisherman coming down our block every Friday, selling fresh fish out of his truck, yelling, "Fish, fresh fish!" And I also remember the knife sharpening man coming down the block in his truck...all the housewives would run out of their homes to get their knives sharpened.

We also had amusement park rides pulled by a truck come down our block regularly in the summer, rides like the WHIP and the HALF MOON,

Brooklyn pizza, was 25 cents a slice, as were the knishes.

Oh I also remember girls had to wear dresses to school each day boys had to wear ties everyday. And every friday we had to wear red white and blue for assembly. The girls wore white midi blouses with a red scarf like tie with a blue skirt and the boys wore blue trousers, white shirt, red tie and a blue jacket..and in case your wondering this was a NYC PUBLIC SCHOOL!

I know this makes me sound ancient, but I'm just shy of 49.

If we were good all week long, we got to stay up on Sunday nights and watch The Wonderful World of Disney (usually a movie with Kurt Russell in it) ~and~ Ed Sullivan (my fav was PoPo Geejo - I know that prolly isn't spelled right). My pink stingray bike that I would ride down "Thrill Hill" in the summer with playing cards attached by clothes pins to the spokes ... my cowgirl outfit complete with real red leather boots ... going to the Pharmacy after Church on Sunday mornings to get a real Ice Cream Soda from the soda counter ... having to wear white gloves to Luncheon at the Tea Room with my Grande MaMa on Saturday afternoons after a morning of shopping at the downtown department stores ... learning to speak French with my kindergarten teacher ... and my first cat, a Tuxedo cat named Binky.

So far everyone's replies have been interesting, but I'm having a hard time remembering... I remember loving my imitation tractor tricycle... I also remember getting really excited when we went to a certain friends house of my parents. They had a pedal operated car in the basement that I went nuts for, but there were some scary looking painted wooden masks on the wall and I got left alone down there. It wasn't too long before I got scared and ran upstairs. That's a really funny memory now.
They were surprised because they knew I loved the car, but I didn't tell them why I came up. I must have been 3 or 4.

This made me think of 2 things that I have not seen anyone else bring up. When I was a kid, there were these 2 toys, but for the life of me, I do not know what they were called. The first one was sort of like playing jump rope by yourself. You had this plastic ring that you wore around your ankle. Attached to this ring was some rope and at the end of the rope was a plastic almost bell shaped cup. The idea was to make the rope go around in circles while you jumped it with your other leg. I think the color of this thing was yellow and red. The other thing was this toy that had two very hard plastic balls that were attached to each other by string that was about, I would say, 15 inches or so. The idea was to grab the string in the middle and move your hand up and down so the balls would crack into each other. I have no idea what the purpose of it was, but it sure made a lot of noise. I think they stopped making these things, because the balls could chip and you could get a piece of the plastic in your eyes. The balls were very hard plastic and they were different colores, but clear. They almost looked like glass. I have no idea what any of these were called.

I remember the first time I got a Barbie doll. My dad saw how I loved her so the next day he took me to the toy store and he said I could get as many clothes and accessories I wanted. It was like the happiest day.

But then a few days later, I watched a 007 movie (I wasn't allowed to) and then I wanted 007 toy guns and kits. My dad didn't like that. So, I saved my allowance and bought a 007 spy kit.

Gosh these are all interesting!

I remember Action Man with his fuzzy hair, Fuzzy Felt, Popoids, Stickle Bricks.....Keepers, Keep Fit Girl (keep fit kits and tapes!), Lights Alive.....

I have also just remembered my Bugs Bunny toy that you pulled his head and then it would pull back as he would say 'What's up Doc?' Pretty surreal really, I think a string in his back would have sufficed!

I am sure i'll think of loads more! I
all this stuff!

Clackers! They were banned from school, as they might be used as a bola-type weapon and then universally banned, as they chipped and bits flew into kids' eyes.

Chutes and Ladders and Candyland games. I had those, I bought them for my kids and I probably will buy them for the twins.

In 1966, I got a pair of white "go-go" boots and tried to wear them with everything. Nancy Sinatra is responsible for my lifelong love of shoes and boots.

Easter meant a new dress, hat, shoes, gloves and purse. This was the first "official" day to wear white shoes.

I remember making tents out of sleeping bags while my parents watched Dallas... Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers....waking up super early to watch Rocky and Bullwinkle (and the national anthem the TV stations always played before they started their morning shows)....Barbie and her 20 different careers, My Little Pony, Play-Dough, Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys..... softball, gymnastics, ballet.....Girl Scout camp and selling cookies door-to-door.... accidentally dropping an iron on my little brother's head (he still has a scar from that one, oops
).....my uncles getting drunk while swimming in our pool in FL....not being able to get to sleep on Christmas eve... I could probably go on and on about things that are really only significant in my family, so I'll quit rambling now

Are you talking about the laffy taffy? Or the airheads???
I remember when Jem was a popular cartoon...I remember gummy bears and the smurfs were also popular shows. I remember having the Jem doll that the earrings lit up on...and then my sister ripped her head...she never worked right after that. I also had the shera set as well...that was another cartoon. And the bottle cap candy that came in orange, grape, coca-cola, and rootbeer. Remember the blue cream soda drink?? It was cream soda, but blue?? And I loved candy necklaces...they were the thing!

My little poney, Carebears, Smurfs, Popples, Cabbage Patch Kids, JEM
I also remember the 'skip it' and pogo balls.
I also remember the old Sylvania light bulb commercials from the 80s where the light people would come out of the lamps. That gave me nightmares. LOL

I really miss my Jem doll. Her earrings would light up and she came with a stage and a sing along tape. I think I had 2 of the Rockers too... and a Misfit lol.
