I am a pretty easygoing person...I can take things in stride...and I am generous to a fault. But I am really getting annoyed with my co-workers these days! Its like common courtesy took a long walk off of a very short pier!
I work in an office environment where some of us share offices. I am an assistant bookkeeper...so I pay a lot of attention to the details...and interruptions can be costly mistakes, if I dont start over. A lot of the work in this office is very much confidential. When I am working on something that requires total concentration...I shut the door.
NO ONE KNOCKS!! They just barge right in, and start rifling through filing cabinets, and slamming drawers shut. Not only does this distract me, but its rude. Is it not common courtesy to knock? What if I were in a meeting with my supervisor?? Its happened before. I have been in my office with a note on the door saying I was in a meeting, do not interrupt, and they still barge in. I was in the middle of a meeting with my supervisor, and our accoountant.
And they think this is acceptable behavior! Well, it isnt. When I come to a office door that is shut...I knock. I dont want to interrupt a phone conservation, or personal time...or I dont know...maybe they are picking their noses, I dont want to see that either!
Its just really starting to bug me. How rude people have gotten. Same thing anywhere I go. I cant even grocery shop without being run over...and then peole are like "damn teenagers" Uh, no. I am 22. I look younger, but I am not.
Anyone else notice a downfall in the manners of people around you?
So much for my southern charm today. I suppose I better take a time out from people today, because I am not playing well with others!!
New sandbox, please!!

I agree, I have the same pet peeves. At times I have even locked my office door when I shut it.

SOme people knock and wait for an anser, some just knock and immediately enter.... some just come on in.

Oh Diane, you are so right to lament! That is very rude of your coworkers to just barge in on you like that!
And yes, manners and common courtesy/respect are taking a backseat to everything else. Just go driving for even a minute- I bet you'll find at least 20 people NOT using their blinkers when turning/changing lanes. To me, that is the epitome of rudeness and disrespect!

This can be really frustrating. When I'm marking, I have the same issues, so I put a notice on my office door asking not to be disturbed as I'm marking. I tell people to email me instead. That generally does the trick.

You are so right about that!! Or people will run you over to get to the off ramp of the interstate, and you are trying to get on! I use my blinkers! And I thought you were supposed to switch places if you were getting off and on/off ramp??? Or you let someone over that ran the lane out, and they dont even thank you?? How rude.
Here in the office, we do have email and we do have extensions that can be buzzed...but no one utilizes them.
I think that society has forgotten about manners. I have found that I get a lot further being nice and polite and smiling at people I dont even know, as opposed to going through life grouching at everyone. Even people in the stores and the restaurants are rude.
Gosh...I am glad to know I am not the only one taking notice of manners flying out the nearest exit door!

I'm finding the younger generation to be more rude than our generation. I'm not sure why - whether they don't care or they don't know any better.

I would lock the door and have a big sign up DO NOT DISTURB. If you have office meetings, perhaps it's an agenda item that could be raised in the meeting and done in a gentle manner to indicate that sometimes it is very difficult to be interrupted when you are trying to concentrate and would appreciate the cooperation of others by not just barging in.

I feel your pain w/ the pffice thing. Shut the door and post a sign asking not to be disturbed. It might work. If not, go to your supervisor and ask what you can do.
I too have rude coworkers, but I am not ALLOWED to close my door! Last winter, a morbidly obese, hypertensive woman with heart disease shut her door...and later had a stroke in her office. Now everyone has to keep their door open. People stand outside my door and talk or yell at each other over cube walls, and the higher-ups use the spare desk in my office for any intern who they don't want to share their office with (like they are supposed to).

I agree w/ you about the manners thing...seems like often times it's people my parents' age and older who do the griping, right after they've been rude to someone young who was just minding their own business and has done nothing to deserve the gripe other than be under the age of 30. I am 26 and look under age, and I get a lot of that junk as well. Even though I don't do anything but mind my business and try to be polite....

It does seem like alot of people act like common courtsey when out the window along time ago. It seems like alot of people would rather run you over than say excuse me. Today kids have no respect and it drives me crazy. I help take care of my elderly grandparents and when we're out I've noticed how disrespectful people can be.
